Morrisville State men held to season low, falter 58-48 on road at Cobleskill

Box Score

COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College men's basketball team was held to a season low 48 points Sunday afternoon, as they dropped a 58-48 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) decision to host SUNY Cobleskill in Cobleskill.

The loss is the second straight for the Mustangs on the road, dropping them to 14-8 overall, 10-5 in conference action.

Morrisville State, normally a high scoring offensive team, shot just 30 percent from the floor on the afternoon on 14-of-46 shots and had just two players reach double figures. Jordan Prior (Cortland, N.Y.) led the losing efforts with 13 points, while teammate Brandon Hanks (Syracuse, N.Y.) contributed 10, compiling a team high seven rebounds.

Brandon Smith paced the Fighting Tigers leader board with 14 points and four assists, while Mike Chapman added to the tallies with 12 points and a team high eight rebounds. Alexis Nunez and Bryan Backus each posted 10 points to round out the leaders, with both combining for 10 of the team's 16 assists.

Morrisville State struggled in the first half, posting a low 18 points as there appeared to be a lid on the rim as they were able to connect on just five shots from the floor. Neither team had a stellar opening period though, as Cobleskill held the one point advantage at the half, only able to connect on 8-of-27 attempts.

In the second, the Mustangs shooting woes continued while Cobleskill found its offensive rhythm, outscoring Morrisville State 39-30 in the final period, while outshooting the visitors 62% to 36.

Morrisville State enters its final week of the regular season with a three game home stretch commencing on Wednesday with Wells College. The Mustangs will wrap it up with a double header on Friday and Saturday, hosting Gallaudet University and Penn State Abington. All three matches are critical for post-season play for the Mustangs, the two-time defending NEAC Champions.
