Morrisville women fall short in second half against Poly

Box Score OSWEGO, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville women's basketball team held on to a slim 32-31 advantage at the halftime break over SUNY Poly in the opening round of the Max Ziel Tournament at Oswego but couldn't hold on as the Wildcats outgained the Mustangs for the 63-55 non-league win.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • SUNY Morrisville women's basketball dropped a 63-55 non-conference decision in the opening round of the Max Ziel tournament held at SUNY Oswego Friday evening, as Poly out-gained the Mustangs in the second half to secure the win.
  • Brooke Hammersley (Weedsport, N.Y.) led Morrisville with 10 points, adding four rebounds and four assists to her totals on the night.
  • Kayla Dykas (Red Hook, N.Y.) and Delimar Vega-Haley (Worcester, N.Y.) each added nine points apiece off the bench for the Mustangs; Vega-Haley also snagged five rebounds.
  • Morrisville was led on the glass by Cara Walker (Phelps, N.Y.) who collected 10.
  • The Mustangs fought back from a 17-11 deficit after the opening quarter with an 11-0 run early in the second quarter as Dykas hit back-to-back three's, but it was a 6-0 spurt to end the quarter that put the Mustangs out in front by one at the break.
  • Morrisville jumped out in front by three early on, and after both teams traded the lead, Poly hit back-to-back buckets to claim a four point lead heading into the fourth quarter of action.
  • Maintaining striking distance through the first half of the final quarter, Vega-Haley nailed a three to bring the Mustangs within one, but Poly went inside to regain a five point advantage with just over three to go.
  • A layup by Vega-Haley brought Morrisville within one possession, but Poly countered with an 8-0 run to put the game out of reach for Morrisville down the stretch.
  • Dezia Becker (Endicott, N.Y.) hit a three with just seconds remaining on the clock, but it wasn't enough as the Mustangs dropped the matchup.
  • Poly held the 50-39 advantage on the glass, gaining 26 second chance points form their efforts with 23 offensive rebounds, but the Mustangs outgained the Wildcats in play off the bench as Morrisville added 32 points with their reserves.

  • Morrisville returns to the court tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Oswego, facing either Keystone or the Lakers in the second round of the tip-off tournament.
