Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Men's Ice Hockey team was unable to mount a comeback against the visiting Geneseo Knights, falling 2-1 in the final game of their SUNYAC series.
The Mustangs, who scored first against the Knights in their Friday night game, were forced to battle from behind on Saturday night. Stephen Collins picked up his 16th goal of the season to put Geneseo ahead 1-0 just over 12 minutes into play in the first period.
Both teams pounded the net, having several second chance opportunities but neither team was able to convert. The opportunistic Knights exploited a Mustang hooking penalty with five minutes left in the second period. Trevor Hills picked up the only power play goal in the game to give Geneseo the 2-0 lead.
The Mustangs who scored four times on the Knights the previous night finally found their opportunity for a comeback with just under two minutes remaining in the second period. Mike Giacometti (Mississauga, Ontario) picked off a pass and found Brett Johnson (Bronxville, N.Y.) breaking through the Geneseo back line. Johnson beat the Knights' goalie, Matt Leon to cut the Geneseo lead to 2-1.
Morrisville continued to have several game tying opportunities in the third, but their best chance came with 1:58 left to play. Geneseo was called for a tripping penalty allowing the Mustangs to go on only their second power play of the game. After 48 seconds of playing a skater up, the Mustangs pulled goalie, Steven Dombrosky (Elizabethtown, Pa.) for an extra skater. However, Morrisville lost that momentum when a player from each team was called for roughing with 13 seconds remaining in the contest.
The Mustangs will travel to Buffalo State on Friday, February 5 before returning home to host the Bengals on Saturday, February 6. Both games are scheduled to start at 7 PM.
