Rowan dominates Mustangs for NJAC win

GLASSBORO, N.J. – Host Rowan University held visiting Morrisville State to a season low 227 yards total offense Saturday afternoon, and kept the high scoring offensive unit out of the end zone as they racked up 464 yards offense in a 31-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) victory over the Mustangs in Glassboro.

The loss is the first for Morrisville State within conference play, dropping them to 3-1 in the NJAC and 5-2 overall. Rowan improves to 4-2 and maintains a perfect conference mark at 3-0.

Lemar Johnson (Ossining, N.Y.) went 10-for-31 on the day for just 119 yards passing, with four completions to Anthony Gray (Smallwood, N.Y.) for 54 yards. Johnson led the Mustangs on the ground, adding 58 net yards on 13 carries, as Morrisville State was held to a season low 108 yards in the running game on the day.

Tyler Dunworth (Poestenkill, N.Y.) tied the single game record of longest punt set by himself just a year ago, booting a total of seven for a combined 295 yards (42.1 average), including one that sailed 78 yards.

Defensively, Shane Carroll (Morrisville, N.Y.) led the Mustang efforts registering a total 10 tackles on the day, including five solo stops, while teammates Colton Evans (West Winfield, N.Y.) and Julian Serrano (Bronx, N.Y.) each contributed nine.

Wither Marcelin led the Profs offensively with a 228 yard gain in 36 attempts in the running game for two touchdown scores, as quarterback Bill McCarty completed 9-of-14 pass attempts for 72 yards.

Darren Dungee registered 11 total stops to lead the defensive unit for Rowan.

Both teams were scoreless until 2:32 to go in the first when Morrisville State committed the first of four turnovers on the day, a fumble that was recovered by Rowan's Jared Sanchez and returned 15 yards for a defensive score.

Rowan was able to get the offensive unit moving in the second quarter, posting a score with under 10 to go as Marcelin capped off the 98-yard, 10-play drive with a seven yard rushing score. Tyler Knighton added a 23 yard field goal minutes to go before the half, extending the hosts lead to 17-0 at the break.

In the third, Rowan extended the lead to 24-0 with a 13-yard scoring run by Marcelin with three minutes to go, before adding their final touchdown of the day 1:05 into the fourth quarter on a Jahsiem Rover 12-yard run into the end zone.

Morrisville State will look to rebound in a week, returning to the field Saturday as they travel to the southernmost NJAC member, Southern Virginia for a noon kick-off.
