MORRISVILLE, N.Y. –
In a rematch from the past, Morrisville State College and SUNY Canton battled it out on the ice Friday night, playing to a 3-3 overtime draw in Morrisville.
With the tie, the Mustangs stand at 4-9-2 overall heading into tomorrow's non-conference contest against Manhattanville. Canton is now 3-12-2 overall on the season.
Both teams were heated competitors in the former days as members of the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA), before making the transition to Division III of the NCAA. The rivalry kicked up fast and furious in the opening minutes of the contest as it was a battle in the middle of the ice before Joe Santino (Woodbridge, ON) broke the scoreless encounter with a power play goal inside the left post off the cross from Steve Dol (Ingersoll, ON) and Jordan Carvalho (Brampton, ON) on the right.
Morrisville State extended the lead to two with 1:36 to go in the first frame, with Carvalho one-timing the cross from John Doyle (New Lowell, ON) on the left post, closing out the period with a 2-0 Mustang lead as both scores came on special teams opportunities.
Zach Paisley made it a one goal game late in the second period, firing a shot from center ice over the left shoulder of Morrisville State netminder Jakob Rasmussen (Vallentuna, SE) on the power play for Canton with 1:24 to go.
Just over a minute into the third period, Dol fed the puck to Matt Scherer (Elgin, Ill.) on the right, who crossed it to Zach Baker (Denver, Colo.) on the back door cut for a quick wrist shot and 3-1 Mustang lead.
Paisley struck again for the Roos with his second power play score of the night at the 7:42 mark into the period, poking the feed into the net from the top of the crease. Sam McLaughlin and Kristian Leach were credited with the assists, cutting the Morrisville State lead to just one.
Canton's Nick Vasilopoulos capitalized on a Mustang turnover at their own blue line and had a breakaway just inside four minutes remaining, firing the tying score inside the right pipe to force the overtime period.
Both teams had ample chances in the extra frame to put the game away, neither could find the back of the net as shot after shot sailed wide. Canton's best opportunity came right after Morrisville State was caught with too many men on the ice during a line change, but Rasmussen twice held on to the puck to prevent a score.
Morrisville State played the final minute of the contest with an extra man as Canton was whistled for hooking, but the Mustangs couldn't get a shot to the net as the Roos stuffed the center.
Rasmussen posted 14 saves on the night for the Mustangs, recording the tie, while Morgan Barr registered 31 in net for Canton, including 12 in the third.
Morrisville State was 2-for-4 in power plays on the night, holding the 34-17 advantage in shots.
The Mustangs return to the ice tomorrow, hosting Manhattanville at 7 p.m.
