Raby departs from role with Morrisville Football

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – SUNY Morrisville head football coach Ed Raby, Jr. announced his resignation from the Mustangs program, departing for the same role with St. John Fisher University.

"First and foremost, we are excited for Ed and this next opportunity he has earned," said Director of Athletics Matt Grawrock.

"Ed has done so much for Morrisville Football. The success in the past few years is down to the never-ending work he put in, along with his staff, to canvas New York and bring in the best players for Morrisville.

"He has so much passion for his team and the young men he led. From the interactions I had when I first got here with his student-athletes, I knew that they were fully engaged with what he was doing.

Raby led the Mustangs program for four seasons as head coach guiding the Mustangs to a 20-22 overall record, two post-season bowl bids and the ECAC Division III Robert "Scotty" Whitelaw bowl title this past season.

Raby began his time with Morrisville in 2017 as the defensive coordinator for the Empire 8 program, serving as interim head coach from 2020-21 before being named head coach in 2022.

For two straight seasons as defensive coordinator, Morrisville's defense was in the spotlight as they powered their way to back-to-back bowl game appearances within the ECAC while holding down several top three rankings within the Empire 8 in statistical categories.

In 2018 Morrisville appeared in the James Lynah Bowl, before making an appearance in the Clayton Chapman Bowl the following season.

As defensive coordinator during the 2019 season, Morrisville finished third overall in the league in interceptions and fourth-down conversions. At the conclusion of the season, four individuals ranked in the top 10 across the conference in tackles, sacks, passes defended and interceptions.

Raby took on the interim head coaching role during one of the most challenging times across intercollegiate athletics and assumed the interim role in 2021 as the Mustangs resumed competition following the COVID pandemic.

In 2022 Raby's unit put together a 7-4 overall record, earning a third trip to the post-season with him on the sidelines, before finishing 4-6 the following year in 2023.

Raby was a spark for the Mustangs program in 2024, as they put together a 7-4 overall record, capturing wins in the last 6-of-7 games, including the "Scotty" Whitelaw Bowl title over Stevenson University on the Mustangs home turf.

Throughout his time with Morrisville, Raby has had several earn post-season accolades, including All-Conference honors, Defensive Player of the Year accolades, D3Football.com All-Region honors, D3football.com All-American accolades, Associated Press All-America honors, among several others.

Likewise, his teams have been lauded for their service within the community through participation programs such as Friday with the Mustangs, bone marrow drives, local food pantry drives and several service initiatives within the campus community.

Off the field, Raby has been instrumental in increasing the selection of players earning recognition as Empire 8 Presidents' List scholars each season, and this past fall, had two earn College Sports Communicators Academic All-District recognition.

His efforts with the Mustangs following the 2022 season gained recognition for Raby as an AFCA 35 Under 35 honoree.

"I have seen the countless hours he has put in to lead our program to being a strong and competitive program in one of the most difficult conferences in the country. He has modeled the right way to coach and modeled what it means to be a Morrisville Mustang.

"We wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors. I am grateful for the time I had to work with him. We have a tall task to find a coach that can bring the intensity, enthusiasm, and drive Ed showed us in his time here."

A national search for Raby's replacement will begin immediately, and all inquiries can be referred to the Director of Athletics, Matt Grawrock.

SUNY Morrisville's curricula are enriched with applied learning and pave the way for opportunity at the Morrisville and Norwich campuses.
