Ticket Punched: Morrisville Volleyball crowned 2022 United East Champs

Mustangs go dancing in Division III Tourney

Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville women's volleyball team will be dancing in the upcoming NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, earning the 2022 United East Tournament Title Saturday afternoon on their home court as they topped third seeded Penn St. Berks 3-0.

  • Top seeded SUNY Morrisville women's volleyball earned the United East conference's automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament Saturday as they claimed the 2022 league crown with a 3-0 match decision over third seeded Penn St. Berks in Morrisville.
  • The Mustangs, who advanced to the final after defeating Lancaster Bible 3-0 in semifinal action, recorded their 12th straight win and will learn of their next opponent during the NCAA selection show, scheduled to air Monday, Nov. 7 at 1 p.m. ET on NCAA.com.
  • Freshman Keelin Baker (Vestal, N.Y.) was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player for her performance on the court across both matches. 
  • The outside hitter pounded 12 kills to the floor in Friday's semi, adding eight digs and three blocks to her totals, before posting 10 more kills in Saturday's Championship, to go along with nine digs.
  • Baker led the team with a .286 hitting effort in today's final, registering an assisted block.
  • Emily Huppee (Liberty Hill, Tex.) added 12 kills to the Mustang totals, while Brianna Gates (Eagle, Colo.) posted eight to go along with nine digs.
  • Kayla Sheasby (Hood River, Ore.) had 18 digs in the defensive play for the hosts, with fellow teammate Siobhan Moore (Leyden, Mass.) putting up 27 assists to add to her two service aces.
  • Cassie Shoupe led the Berks efforts with 10 kills, adding an assist, while teammate Aubrey Hunt added seven kills and Sarah Nichols five.
  • Julia Rathsam registered 22 assists and eight digs, while Riley Kovach led the defensive game for the Nittany Lions with 10 digs.
  • Berks closes out their season with a 19-10 overall record.
  • Morrisville came out the gates fast and furious racing out to a 5-0 lead with the first five serves of the contest.
  • Berks was able to pull within four, but Baker kicked off a rally that found the Mustangs leading by nine midway through the opening set.
  • Morrisville outgained the Lions for a 22-9 advantage and down the stretch put the set away with a 25-14 victory with a kill from Kathryn Dolan (Quincy, Calif.) on the right side.
  • In the second set, Morrisville had to battle point for point with the Nittany Lions, who led for a majority of the set, including a 20-15 advantage until a service error gave Morrisville the serve.
  • Back-to-back attack errors by Berks brought the Mustangs within two, before a kill by Huppee brough Morrisville within one, 20-19.
  • Berks regained the two-point advantage over the top seed, but three straight errors by the Lions shifted the momentum back to Morrisville, who took the lead on a kill by Baker.
  • Morrisville closed out the set with the 25-23 victory as Berks was whistled for a ball handling error for the set win.
  • It was all Morrisville in the third set, building up a four-point lead early on and not looking back as they earned the 25-17 set victory for the match win.
  • Morrisville was able to maintain the advantage over Berks despite a four-point rally, with attacking errors by the Lions that pushed the Mustangs out in front, sealing the deal with a kill by Baker, followed by the match point by Huppee.
  • The title is the fourth for the Mustangs under guidance of Wallace and Kim Dunkleman, who was also a player for the Mustangs during the first tournament run.
  • Morrisville will be making a program fourth appearance in the NCAA's, after earning bids in 2017, 2018, and 2019.
