WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville field hockey collected their first win of 2021 Saturday afternoon, netting an overtime thriller as they topped St. Josephs 3-2 in West Hartford, Connecticut.
  • Morrisville was first to strike on the afternoon with 7:39 showing on the clock, as Jenna Wilbur (Greenwich, N.Y.) had the reverse stick tap on the right post for the 1-0 Morrisville lead off the chip from Heather Cummings (Akron, N.Y.).
  • St. Joseph responded shortly after, though, with an equalizing score, lifting the ball at the left top of the circle and sending it over the head of Mustang keeper Morgan Dueber (Owego, N.Y.).
  • Playing to a one goal tie, the hosts took the 2-1 lead with 12:15 remining in the fourth quarter off a penalty corner play score inside the left post.
  • That was short-lived however, as Morrisville collected the ball inside 11 minutes and had a breakaway downfield.
  • Camberly VanValkenburg (Walton, N.Y.) carried the ball along the right side of the field into the circle and crossed to the left to Erika Herrman (Oneida, N.Y.) who had the touch into the back of the net for the game tying tally.
  • Both teams had chances in the closing minutes of regulation, but neither could find a winning score forcing the sudden victory 7v7 period.
  • St. Joseph's threatened early and often, but it was a turnover that started in the Mustangs defensive end that made the difference.
  • Morrisville's Heather Cummings (Akron, N.Y.) received the ball on the left wing and carried it downfield into the circle weaving through three defenders before finding VanValkenburg at the stroke mark.
  • VanValkenburg pulled the feed stick side and with a low lift got the ball past the host keeper for the winning tally 3:41 into the extra frame.

WHAT'S NEXT:

  • Morrisville returns to the field Tuesday, traveling to Houghton College for a 5 p.m. non-conference match up.
