Mustangs Erupt for 6-2 NEWHL Victory over Buffalo State

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Mustangs rebounded after a tough 2-1 Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) loss last weekend against SUNY Potsdam to defeat the Buffalo State Bengals on the road, 6-2.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score:  Morrisville 6, Buffalo St. 2 (by period:  Morrisville 1-1-4, Buffalo St. 1-0-1
  • Location:  Buffalo, N.Y.
  • Records:  Morrisville (8-9-1, 5-5-1 NEWHL), Buffalo St. (3-14-0, 1-9-0 NEWHL)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • The Bengals took advantage of a Morrisville hooking penalty mid-way through the first period to take a 1-0 advantage.
  • The Mustangs, who found themselves on the power play ten times throughout the course of the contest, capitalized on their third attempt to get the equalizer in the ending minute of the first period.
  • After the Bengals cleared the puck out of their zone, Morrisville's goal tender, Lacey Friesen (Marquette, Man.) collected it behind her own net and left it off to Maddison Devlin (Campbell River, B.C.).  Devlin proceeded to skate coast to coast, weaving through Bengal defenders for her fourth goal of the season.  Friesen was credited with the assist.
  • Deadlocked at 1-1, Mackenzie Lombardi (Hamilton, Ont.) put the Mustangs up 2-1 at the 13:36 mark in the second.
  • Lombardi provided what would later be determined as the game winner just under three minutes into the third with her 10th goal of the season to put Morrisville up 3-1.
  • However, Buffalo State struck back with their second power play goal of the game four minutes later, bringing the score to 3-2.
  • The Bengals momentum would be short lived as Morrisville picked up three more goals in the third period.
  • Alana McDonald (Potsdam, N.Y.) started the run with an even handed strike just 19 seconds after Buffalo State's power play tally.
  • Morrisville added to their lead with two more power play goals, the first of which was scored by Rhys Brown at the 18:06 mark.  Emily Henderson (Coconut Creek, Fla.) followed that up with her first collegiate goal in the final second of play to wrap up the 6-2 victory.
  • Friesen picked up the win in net for the Mustangs, recording 22 saves.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Mustangs return home on Wednesday night for another NEWHL contest against the Red Dragons from SUNY Cortland.  Puck drop is set for 7 PM.
