Mustangs Pick Up Key NEWHL Victory 2-1 over SUNY Cortland

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Mustangs picked up a much needed Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) win on Wednesday night, defeating the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons, 2-1.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score:  Morrisville 2, SUNY Cortland 1 (by period:  Morrisville 0-2-0, SUNY Cortland 0-0-1)
  • Location:  Morrisville, N.Y.
  • Records:  Morrisville (9-9-1, 6-5-1 NEWHL), SUNY Cortland (11-5-2, 5-5-2 NEWHL)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • The Mustangs received an early opportunity to jump on the Red Dragons, when the visitors were whistled for a roughing penalty just 41 seconds into the contest.
  • Unfortunately, Morrisville could not get anything going and the teams would skate to a scoreless draw to close out the first period.
  • The Mustangs found the 1-0 advantage just under two minutes into the second period when Rhys Brown (Kemptville, Ont.) broke through the Red Dragon line for a break away tally.  Mackenzie Lombardi (Hamilton, Ont.) and Cassie Suran (Freeport, Pa.) picked up the assists as they worked the puck through the neutral zone to Brown.
  • Shortly thereafter, the Mustangs tried to take advantage of another Cortland penalty, but could not extend their lead.
  • Suran and Lombardi would eventually hook up again, this time finding Alana McDonald (Potsdam, N.Y.) who poked the puck away from a Cortland defender for her own break away score at the 15:14 mark in the second period.
  • The Mustangs would wrap up the second period with a 2-0 advantage.
  • Cortland found an opportunity just over four minutes into the final frame when, Grace Schnorr, their team's leading scorer cut the Morrisville lead in half.
  • However, that would be the only blemish on the stats line for Morrisville goaltender, Lacey Friesen (Marquette, Man.) as the Mustangs held on for the 2-1 win.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Mustangs hit the road on Friday for another key NEWHL contest.  Morrisville will travel to Oswego State for a 7 PM puck drop.
