Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. – Visiting Morrisville State College scored five times in the fourth quarter Saturday afternoon and held host SUNY Geneseo to just one tally as they staged the comeback and collected a 12-11 non-conference season opening victory in Geneseo.
Morrisville State (1-0) had balanced scoring in its offensive attack, as eight posted scores on the day, including senior Louie Geswaldo (Lafayette, N.Y.) who collected a team high three, adding an assist for four points.
John Sherlock (Tully, N.Y.) and Kyle Shannon (Stanhope, N.J.) each tallied two, with Sherlock adding an assist.
Senior Chris Fiore (Staten Island, N.Y.) had 12 saves in the 2016 debut, three alone in the fourth quarter.
Joe Chiara led Geneseo with the hat trick, finding the back of the net three times on the day, while teammate Tim Wright added two scores and assisted another two. Six additional Geneseo players each posted a goal in the Knight efforts.
Michael Yehl had eight saves as he collected the loss between the pipes.
Geneseo drew first blood on the day, netting the first score just 15 seconds into the opening quarter, before Geswaldo answered just over a minute later with a rifle down the center of the box to even the contest at one less than two minutes in.
The hosts then rattled off three straight for the 4-1 advantage nearly six minutes in, but Morrisville State pulled within a score to close out the quarter with tallies from Sherlock and Brad Biggs (Tully, N.Y.).
Chiara regained the two goal lead for the Knights early on in the second, but Shannon responded for Morrisville State with an unassisted goal at the 9:42 mark.
The hosts posted two within two minutes time to regain the three goal advantage, but an even tally by Eliud Evans (Culver City, Calif.) with eight seconds remaining on the clock in the half sent the contest into the break with a 7-5 Geneseo lead.
Geneseo posted three goals in the third and held the Mustangs to just two to maintain a three goal lead heading into the final frame. Nick Geswaldo (Lafayette, N.Y.) collected his first collegiate score at the 12:36 mark before (Louie) Geswaldo collected his second of the day on the man up opportunity at 7:44.
In the fourth, an even tally by Storm Adams (Akwesasne, N.Y.) at 12:47 ignited a three goal Mustang offensive run as Geswaldo added his third of the day and second man-advantage tally 35 seconds later, before Logan Peters (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) posted his first collegiate tally 24 seconds after to even the contest at 10 with 11:48 remaining.
Geneseo took the 11-10 lead with 4;06 remaining on the clock on a score by Chiara, but Morrisville State again responded with the game tying goal 39 seconds later off the stick of Sherlock. Evans collected the assist, finishing with four total points as he posted a goal and assisted a total three.
John Petriello (Carmel, N.Y.) won the ensuing face-off for the Mustangs, and after a constant attack at net by Morrisville State, Shannon was able to bury the eventual game winner off the feed from Peters. Petriello won 13-of-26 from the center line.
Geneseo held the slim advantage in ground balls, 23-22, as Morrisville State's Bryan Cline (Cicero, N.Y.) collected a team high five on the day.
Morrisville State returns to the field Wednesday, hosting Marywood University in a non-conference match up on Drake Field in Morrisville. Marywood enters the contest with an 0-3 record to date on the season.
