Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College men's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaking 9-8 triple overtime decision to visiting SUNY Potsdam Saturday afternoon, on Drake Field in Morrisville.
The loss is the second straight for the Mustangs, who drop to 3-2 overall. Potsdam improves to 5-1 with the win.
Storm Adams (Akwesasne, N.Y.) led the Morrisville State efforts with two goals and two assists, while teammate Louie Geswaldo (Lafayette, N.Y.) added two scores. Four additional Mustangs notched goals on the day, including Logan Peters (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Corey Grace (Penn Yan, N.Y.) who scored once and assisted another.
Berkley Stone led Potsdam with four goals, while teammate Pat Bonafede added a goal and two assists for the Bears.
Playing to a back-and-forth contest for a majority of the day, Morrisville State held a two goal lead for most of the fourth quarter until a turnover by the Mustangs on the clear attempt led to a Potsdam goal, rallying the Bears for two straight to tie the contest, and force the overtime periods.
The Mustangs had plenty of opportunities in the first overtime period to put the game away, but Bears goalkeeper Pete Gropp turned away three, and Chris Fiore (Staten Island, N.Y.) followed with one save for Morrisville State to force a second overtime frame.
In the second, Potsdam enforced offensive pressure on the Mustangs, but Fiore kept the Bears at length, adding two saves to his game total 10 on the day to force a third overtime segment.
A costly turnover by the Mustangs down the stretch gave possession to the Bears with under 30 seconds remaining on the clock, and with 16 ticks to go, Bonafede swung the ball from the point in the center of the box to the left where teammate Ed Doherty fired the ball past Fiore inside the left pipe for the win.
Gropp finished with 10 saves for the Bears.
Morrisville State dominated the center stripe, winning 17-of-23 face offs, with nine of those victories coming from Scott Augustine (Saranac Lake, N.Y.). John Petriello (Carmel, N.Y.) collected eight wins.
The Mustangs edged Potsdam in the ground ball game, 31-29, as Augustine picked up a team high five.
