Morrisville plagued by errors in double-header loss to Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville softball team dropped a double-header to host Oswego State in SUNYAC action Friday afternoon, recording a  combined seven errors across two games as the Lakers posted the league sweep.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville softball dropped a league double-header Friday afternoon as host Oswego posted the 16-3 (5 innings) and 11-6 SUNYAC wins over the Mustangs in Oswego.
  • Morrisville opened with two runs in the top of the first inning in the opening frame of game one, but the Lakers scored two of their own in the bottom of the inning before taking advantage of one of five Mustang errors in the next frame to open the game up to a four-run advantage.
  • Oswego added seven runs to their lead in the bottom of the third on eight hits, before taking advantage of four errors in the fourth to extend the lead to 16-2.
  • Morrisville was able to get one back in the top of the fifth, but it was not enough as Oswego posted the win.
  • Sara Brefka (East Syracuse, N.Y.) led the Mustangs with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate, posting two of three runs on the day.
  • Callie Lafontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.) added the third run, going 1-for-2 from the plate alongside Gracie Battles (Fulton, N.Y.) and Jaiden Bellinger (Onondaga, N.Y.).
  • Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) recorded the loss on the mound after throwing 3.2 innings.
  • Kaylor collected three strikeouts and allowed five earned runs, before Kendall Darling (Lacona, N.Y.) finished out .1 innings and posting one strikeout, allowing five earned runs.
  • In the nightcap, Oswego held a 5-1 lead before Morrisville put together a rally over the next two innings, but the Mustangs fell short in their efforts as the Lakers posted the 11-6 win.
  • After Oswego scored four in the bottom of the second for the 5-1 advantage, Morrisville rallied for three runs in the top of the third to pull within one.
  • The Lakers, however, added four more to their total in the bottom of the inning, leading 9-4 after three.
  • Morrisville plated two runs in the top of the fourth to trail 9-6, but their rally fell short as Oswego scored twice in the bottom of the sixth and held the visitors scoreless in the top of the final frame to collect the win.
  • Bellinger and Erin Luther (Barton, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 to lead Morrisville, Bellinger adding an RBI, while Lafontaine put together a 2-for-4 performance with two runs.
  • Kaylie Kendrick (Johnson City, N.Y.) went 1-for-3, posting a team high three RBI's, two on a double down the left line in the fourth.
  • Battles struck out three in six innings on the mound in the loss, facing 33 batters across the contest.

  • Morrisville will wrap up the season Saturday with a double-header on the road at SUNY Canton. Game one is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start in Canton.
