Softball sweeps Canton in season finale

CANTON, N.Y. – Visiting SUNY Morrisville softball wrapped up the 2026 season Saturday afternoon with a double-header sweep of host SUNY Canton on the road in Canton.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville softball wrapped up the 2026 season slate Saturday afternoon on the road at SUNY Canton, toppling the Roos 5-4 in game one, before rolling to a five inning win in the second of the day's action to post a 17-2 victory in SUNYAC action.
  • Morrisville utilized a four-run opening inning in the first, adding a single run in the top of the fifth before staving off a Roo rally in the bottom of the sixth to post the 5-4 victory in the day's opener.
  • The Mustangs loaded the bases with the first three at bats, before Kaylie Kendrick (Johnson City, N.Y.) reached on a fielding error to bat in the game's first three scores.
  • A single shot through the left side by Erin Luther (Barton, N.Y.) plated Kendrick as Morrisville closed out the opening frame with a 4-0 advantage.
  • Morrisville added to their lead in the top of the fifth with a double to left center that sent Sara Brefka (East Syracuse, N.Y.) across home plate.
  • Canton posted their first run in the bottom of the frame, cutting the lead to four, before rallying for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it a one run ball game.
  • Morrisville threatened to score in the top of the seventh, but the Roos held off the Mustangs with a last chance opportunity in the final frame to continue their comeback attempt.
  • Canton's lead off reached first, before Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) threw her seventh strikeout of the game for the inning's first out.
  • Morrisville turned a grounder sent to second base into a double-play, ending the game and giving the Mustangs the 5-4 SUNYAC win.
  • Kaylor collected the win on the mound, allowing three earned runs in 32 batters faced, while posting seven strikeouts.
  • Morrisville, who collected nine hits across the contest, had three come off the bat of Gracie Battles (Fulton, N.Y.) who was a perfect 3-for-3 on the day, with another two from Hannah Brennan (Trumansburg, N.Y.) who also posted a run.
  • Brefka finished 2-for-4 with two runs for the Mustangs.
  • In the second of the double-header, Morrisville trailed 2-1 after the first, but regained the lead with a three run second inning, exploding offensively for a combined 13 runs in the third and fourth frames, respectively, to capture the 17-2 five inning win.
  • In the top of the second inning, Morrisville capitalized on a throwing error by the Roos defense to score twice for their first lead of the contest, ending the inning with a third run as Maddy Krueger (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) crossed home after the ground out.
  • Morrisville extended their lead to 10-2 in the top of the third, loading the bases with the first three at bats, before Brennan scored on a wild pitch to kick off a six-run offensive blitz.
  • A shot up the middle by Kaylor sent Kendrick across home plate, before Madeline Brennan (Salisbury Hills, N.Y.) added an RBI of her own on a throwing error by the third baseman.
  • A single shot by Callie Lafontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.) to the fence in left field sent Brennan home, before Brefka plated Lafontaine for the 10th Mustang run with her single up middle.
  • Morrisville continued their momentum in the top of the fourth with a seven run frame, loading the bases with just one out to start the inning.
  • A double by Lafontaine scored Brennan and Jaiden Bellinger (Onondaga, N.Y.), before Morrisville posted another run on a fielding error two at bats later.
  • Kendrick collected an RBI single to left before Battles posted the two-run single shot up the middle to cap off the inning with a 17-2 Mustang advantage.
  • Morrisville's defense closed out the bottom of the frame with three straight outs, two strikeouts from Kaylor, sending the game into the fifth with a commanding 15-run lead.
  • Canton held Morrisville scoreless in the top of the inning but were unable to rally as Morrisville registered three ground outs to close out the game for the victory.
  • Battles collected her first win on the mound, throwing three innings and striking out one, before Kaylor closed out the contest with the final two frames.
  • Kaylor strike out two, bringing her collegiate total to 196 to close out her career.
  • Four Morrisville batters recorded three hits apiece in the contest, including Madeline Brennan who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three tins scored and an RBI.
  • Lafontaine put together a 3-for-5 performance, collecting four RBI's and three runs, while Kendrick added a 3-for-4 plate effort that saw her post two RBI's and two runs to close out their collegiate careers.
  • Kaylor wrapped up the leaderboard for the Mustangs with a 3-for-4 outing, scoring one and posting an RBI.
  • Kaylor and Lafontaine each recorded double's in the game.
