Morrisville battles back in nightcap to record split with Thoroughbreds

MORRISVILLE N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville softball team earned a split in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon, battling back from a two run deficit in the nightcap to snag a win from visiting Skidmore College at the softball complex in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville softball earned the split in non-league action Wednesday afternoon with visiting Skidmore College, falling in the first of the double-header by a 12-3 final in five innings, before capturing the win in the second by a 6-5 final score.
  • In the first of the day's action, Skidmore opened the contest with four runs in the top of the first, adding eight more across the next four to collect the 12-3 win in five.
  • Morrisville was able to put one on the board in the bottom of the opening inning with a single off the bat of Lindsey Fish (Freeville, N.Y.) to drive in Callie Lafontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.), cutting the deficit to three after the first frame.
  • Skidmore extended their advantage to five runs in the top of the second and added three more in the top of the fourth to open the gap to 9-1.
  • Morrisville got two back in the bottom of the inning, though, an RBI single off the bat of Olivia Camacho (Barrigada, Guam) to right field, before J'Anne Colbow (Weyburn, Sask.) had the grounder to drive in Hannah Brennan (Trumansburg, N.Y.) who reached on a single to right center earlier in the inning.
  • Skidmore put the game out of reach in the top of the fifth, scoring three, while holding the Mustangs scoreless in the frame to earn the win.
  • Camacho led Morrisville from the plate with a 1-for-1 effort, while Colbow and Brennan each went 1-for-2.
  • Kendall Darling (Lacona, N.Y.) recorded the loss on the mound, throwing 3.2 innings and allowing eight earned runs, before seeing Gracie Battles (Fulton, N.Y.) finish the final 1.1 innings.
  • Battles recorded four strikeouts.
  • In the nightcap, Skidmore took the 4-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning before the Mustangs rallied late to overcome the Thoroughbreds and capture the non-league win by a 6-5 final.
  • Skidmore put a run on the board in the top of the first inning, before Morrisville answered back and scored twice in the bottom of the frame.
  • Brennan recorded a two-run single, scoring Fish and Sara Brefka (East Syracuse, N.Y.) who were moved into scoring position by a sacrifice hit off the bat of Kaylie Kendrick (Johnson City, N.Y.).
  • Morrisville maintained the 2-1 advantage until the top of the fifth inning when Skidmore took the 3-2 lead following back-to-back hits that saw two reach home plate.
  • The Thoroughbreds extended the lead to two in the following inning, scoring an unearned run on a single shot to second base.
  • Skidmore's defense was able to put two quick outs on the board, but the Mustangs put together a rally, responding with four runs of their own to take the lead heading into the final frame.
  • With pitch runner Erin Luther (Barton, N.Y.) moving into scoring position after two quick outs, Jaiden Bellinger (Syracuse, N.Y.) blasted a single up the middle to send Luther across home plate.
  • Lafontaine followed with a single to left field, putting two on base for the Mustangs, before Brefka doubled down the left line for two RBI's.
  • Fish stepped to the plate and singled up the middle, scoring Brefka, and giving the hosts the 6-4 lead after six innings.
  • Skidmore had two in scoring position before sending a single to right field, cutting the lead to one, but Brefka was able to get the ball in and catch the tying run out at home.
  • Morrisville closed out the inning with Brennan snagging the line drive to third out of the air for the third out, securing the thrilling non-conference win.
  • Fish and Bellinger each put together a 3-for-3 performance from the plate to lead the Mustangs, both registering an RBI in the win.
  • Lafontaine went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Brefka was 2-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs tallied.
  • Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) registered the win in the complete game on the mound for the Mustangs, allowing four earned runs while striking out six.

  • Morrisville resumes SUNYAC play Friday, hosting SUNY New Paltz in a 3 p.m. afternoon double-header, before hosting Oneonta on Saturday in a noon start in Morrisville.
