Mustangs Drop Double-Header at SUNY Poly

UTICA, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville softball team came up short in both ends of a double-header on the road at SUNY Poly, falling 7-0 in the opener before a late comeback from the Wildcats in game two ended in a narrow 9-8 defeat.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • In the first game on the afternoon, Morrisville threatened early after Kaylie Kendrick (Johnson City, N.Y.) doubled to left center in the second, but the Mustangs were unable to capitalize as SUNY Poly worked out of the inning to keep the game scoreless.
  • The Wildcats broke through in the bottom of the second, taking a 1-0 lead on an unearned run before adding to their advantage in the fourth behind an RBI triple to extend the margin to 2-0.
  • SUNY Poly created separation in the fifth, plating four runs on four hits to build a 6-0 lead, capitalizing on timely hitting and defensive miscues.
  • The Wildcats added one final run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to secure the 7-0 victory.
  • Sara Brefka (East Syracuse, N.Y.) and Gracie Battles (Fulton, N.Y.) each recorded hits for Morrisville, while Kendrick's double marked the Mustangs' only extra-base hit of the contest.
  • Piper Kaylor (Montgonery, N.Y.) recorded the loss after giving up seven runs to 30 batters in six innings, while striking out two.
  • The Mustangs came out strong in the opening frame of the second game, plating six runs on four hits to take an early 6-0 advantage.
  • Hannah Brennan (Trumansburg, N.Y.) delivered an RBI single, while Erin Luther (Barton, N.Y.) and Olivia Camacho (Barrigada, Guam) each drove in runs.
  • Jaiden Bellinger (Syracuse, N.Y.) added a sacrifice fly while Madeline Brennan (Salisbury Hills, N.Y.) capped the inning with an RBI single as Morrisville seized control early.
  • SUNY Poly responded with two runs in the bottom of the first and continued to chip away, adding two more in the third to cut the Morrisville lead to 6-4.
  • After a scoreless fourth, the Mustangs added to their lead in the fifth, as Brefka and Kendrick each recorded RBI singles to extend the score to 8-4.
  • The Wildcats answered once again in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of errors to score twice making it a two-run game heading into the sixth.
  • SUNY Poly completed the comeback in the sixth, capitalizing on a passed ball and a two-run single to take their first lead and seal the 9-8 victory over Morrisville.
  • Brennan led the Mustangs at the plate, going 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Callie Lafontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.) added a pair of hits and scored twice.
  • Kendall Darling (Lacona, N.Y.) got the start, allowing four runs on five hits across 2.1 innings.
  • Battles provided solid relief in the middle innings, tossing 1.2 scoreless frames while allowing just one hit.
  • Kaylor was charged with the loss, surrendering five runs over the final two innings.
