Morrisville women fall short in double with Plattsburgh

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville softball team battled visiting Plattsburgh State in two complete SUNYAC matches Friday afternoon in Morrisville, falling the closely matched contests 1-0 and 8-5.

THE BASICS:

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville softball took to the field against Plattsburgh State in SUNYAC play Friday afternoon, falling short in the closely matched contests by final scores of 1-0 and 8-5.
  • Plattsburgh plated one in the top of the first inning to claim a 1-0 lead and held off the Mustangs across all seven innings to collect the SUNYAC win.
  • The Cardinals score came on a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring their lead runner from third on the play.
  • Plattsburgh threatened to add to their lead in the top of the fifth, but the Mustangs defense staved off their rally, including the putout on the line drive back to pitcher Kendall Darling (Lacona, N.Y.).
  • Morrisville attempted a bottom of the seventh rally, but was held short as the Cardinals posted the victory.
  • Kaylie Kendrick (Johnson City, N.Y.) and Isabella Gaskins (Binghamton, N.Y.) each went 1-for-3 from the plate for the Mustangs.
  • Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) collected two strikeouts in the loss on the mound, throwing 4.1 innings and allowing just two hits, before Darling appeared for the final 2.2, allowing one hit.
  • In similar fashion as the first battle, Plattsburgh took the 1-0 lead early in the first, scoring on a throwing error, before adding three additional runs in the top of the third to open the lead to 4-0.
  • Morrisville countered to even the score at four with two runs apiece in the third and fourth innings, before taking the lead in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Plattsburgh, however, would plate four in the top of the seventh to regain the lead and post the league sweep.
  • Leadoff Callie Lafontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.) initiated the Mustang rally in the third, reaching base on balls, before an error by the Cardinals saw the hosts load the bases.
  • Gaskins shot a single to right field to score Lafontaine, before Lindsey Fish (Freeville, N.Y.) added a single to short to plate Hannah Brennan (Trumansburg, N.Y.), making it a 4-2 ball game in favor of Plattsburgh.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Sara Brefka (East Syracuse, N.Y.) reached on a bunt towards third, before Lafontaine again reached on base on balls.
  • Kendrick shot a single to left field to load the bases for the Mustangs, before Brennan's hit towards short resulted in an error, plating two for the hosts to tie the contest at four.
  • Morrisville took the 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth, as Fish led off reaching on a Cardinal error, before using her quick foot to reach third.
  • A single shot to third by Celeste Baldwin (Bainbridge, N.Y.) sent Fish across home plate, before the Cardinals defense closed out the inning with a ground out and fly out.
  • Plattsburgh registered back-to-back hits in the top of the seventh inning, placing runners on first and third, before a sacrifice fly sent the tying run home, knotting the game at five apiece.
  • The Cardinals took the lead on a follow up shot up middle, scoring two, before wrapping up the inning with a final run, leading 8-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
  • Plattsburgh retired all three batters collecting the win.
  • Baldwin and Brefka each went 1-for-3 to lead Morrisville, while Fish and Haskins added a 1-for-4 effort, each posting an RBI alongside Baldwin.
  • Kaylor recorded the loss on the mound, throwing the final inning.
  • Darling earned the start and threw 6.0 innings, allowing five earned runs.

  • Morrisville will host Potsdam tomorrow at noon on the Mustangs home field, in the regular season finale.
