Morrisville women take game one from Oswego; game two suspended

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville softball team picked up a 3-1 SUNYAC win Tuesday afternoon as they downed the visiting Oswego State Lakers in the first of the day's double-header action, before the second was suspended due to storms in the area.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville softball picked up a 3-1 win in game one of Tuesday afternoons double-header action against visiting Oswego State Lakers, before having the second suspended in the bottom of the second inning due to thunderstorm weather.
  • Morrisville took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the opening inning, as Kaylie Kendrick (Johnson City, N.Y.) smacked a single to center field to score Hannah Brennan (Trumansburg, N.Y.) and Sara Brefka (East Syracuse, N.Y.) who each reached base earlier in the inning.
  • Brefka reached on a fielder's choice, before Brennan shot a single up middle.
  • Oswego was able to get one back in the top of the third inning, taking advantage of a Mustang error to plate one, but Morrisville was able to counter the score and regain the two-run lead in the bottom of the fourth.
  • After reaching base on a single down the right field line, Celeste Baldwin (Bainbridge, N.Y.) advanced to third and into scoring position on an Oswego error, that saw teammate Callie Lafontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.) also reach base.
  • Lafontaine initiated the scoring run stealing second and during the throw, Baldwin beat the Oswego defense to home plate to put the Mustangs ahead 3-1.
  • Oswego attempted a rally in the top of the seventh, but Morrisville's defense forced three straight outs to secure the win.
  • Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) registered eight strikeouts, including one in the top of the seventh, to record the win on the mound for Morrisville, allowing one earned run.
  • Brennan led the Mustangs at the plate with her 2-for-3 effort, while Lafontaine, Kendrick and Baldwin each went 1-for-3; Kendrick recording two RBI's.
  • In the nightcap, Morrisville held a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the second inning before the game was suspended due to thunderstorms.
  • The contest will resume play from the point of suspension at a date to be announced soon.

  • Morrisville returns to the field later this week, hosting Plattsburgh and Potsdam in the regular season weekend finale.
