Softball splits afternoon double with Elmira

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville softball team went extra innings in game one in a thrilling 2-1 victory, before splitting the day's action with visiting Elmira College at the Mustangs Field in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville softball split the day's double-header action with visiting Elmira College, taking the 2-1 win in extra innings in game one, before falling behind early in game two, dropping the 10-1 five inning decision.
  • Needing an extra frame to decide the winner in game one, Elmira posted the first win of the afternoon off a double to right field, scoring the runner placed on second base.
  • Two ensuing outs sent the Mustangs into the bottom of the eighth inning, and within two batters, evened the contest at one run apiece as Hannah Brennan (Trumansburg, N.Y.) reached on a fielders choice to bat in Lindsey Fish (Freeville, N.Y.) who was placed on second at the top of the inning.
  • On the ensuing at bat, Kaylie Kendrick (Johnson City, N.Y.) posted the walk off hit for the win, sending the blast towards first where the ball was bobbled, plating Emery Sawitzki (Amsterdam, N.Y.) who had a single to right field earlier in the inning for the 2-1 victory.
  • Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) recorded 10 strikeouts in the victory on the mound, facing 27 batters and allowing two total hits.
  • Fish led the Mustangs at the plate with a 2-for-4 effort, scoring one, while five additional teammates recorded hits, including Abbie Platt (Oneonta, N.Y.) and Sara Brefka (East Syracuse, N.Y.) who each went 1-for-3.
  • In the nightcap, Elmira opened with three runs in the top of the first, before opening the gap to eight with six additional scores in the second, handing Morrisville the 10-1 loss after five innings of action.
  • The Mustangs lone run came in the bottom of the first inning as Callie Lafontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.) led off with a bunt to reach base.
  • After a hit advanced Lafontaine to second, Sawitzki rifled a triple to right field, sending the junior home for the score.
  • Morrisville cut the lead to 3-1 after the first, but the Soaring Eagles had the bats swinging in the second, plating six to increase their lead to 9-1 after one and a half innings.
  • The Mustangs attempted to rally but were left on base.
  • Lafontaine went 2-for-3 from the plate for the Mustangs, while Sawitzki added a 1-for-2 effort with an RBI, alongside Brefka, who also went 1-for-3 in batting.
  • Fish was 1-for-3 in the five innings.
  • Kaylor threw the loss, appearing for 1.2 innings and collecting one strike out, before Kendall Darling (Lacona, N.Y.) threw the remainder 3.1 innings, along one earned run, while striking out one.
