Morrisville sweeps Hartwick in double-header action

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Through sleet and cold rainy weather, the SUNY Morrisville softball team swept visiting Hartwick College in double-header action Wednesday afternoon in Morrisville posting the win with game scores of 8-0 (5 innings) and 10-5.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville softball battled cold and wet conditions Wednesday afternoon and swept visiting Hartwick College in double-header action, pulling their record even at 5-5 overall.
  • In game one of the day's action, Morrisville took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning before exploding for four runs in the fourth and plated a final in the bottom of the fifth to collect the 8-0 non-conference victory.
  • Morrisville's first run came off a single shot by Hannah Brennan (Trumansburg, N.Y.) to center field to drive in Callie Lafontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.).
  • Kaylie Kendrick (Johnson City, N.Y.) followed with a double to left to plate Brennan and Celeste Baldwin (Bainbridge, N.Y.) added a single to right to send Kendrick home.
  • Hartwick attempted to rally and had runners in scoring position in the top of the fourth, but left both on base, opening the door for the Mustangs to add to their lead with four additional runs in the bottom of the inning.
  • After getting two on base, Lafontaine placed a bunt towards third to score Abbie Platt (Oneonta, N.Y.) on the throw, before a ground out by Emery Sawitzki (Amsterdam, N.Y.) scored Lindsey Fish (Freeville, N.Y.) who reached on a single earlier in the inning.
  • Brennan added another RBI to her total as she sent a shot to right field to score Lafontaine, before Kendrick registered her second double base hit to center to plate Brennan.
  • In the top of the fifth, Hartwick sent a single down the right field line to advance a runner, but the Mustangs defense put a halt to the effort as they caught the lead runner out at third.
  • Morrisville put the game away in the bottom of the inning as Fish registered a walk off triple to right field to score Sara Brefka (East Syracuse, N.Y.) who reached on a fielder's choice the at bat prior.
  • Morrisville recorded 13 hits in 27 at bats in the contest, with Kendrick going a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBU's and a run scored.
  • Brennan added a 2-for-3 effort with two RBU's and Fish a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with an RBI and run.
  • Platt also had a multi-hit game for the Mustangs, going 2-for-3.
  • Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) recorded the win on the mound, throwing the complete game and allowing three total hits, while collecting six strikeouts in the shut out.
  • In the night cap, after Hartwick scored one in the top of the first inning, Morrisville snatched the lead in the bottom of the inning, plating five, before adding three more in the bottom of the third, and another two in the sixth to collect the 10-5 victory in seven innings.
  • After Hartwick plated one in the top of the first, Fish led off for the Mustangs in their first at bat of the night cap, reaching on an error by the right fielder, before advancing to second on the throw with her quick foot.
  • Fish stole third before Lafontaine shot a double to left center to score the freshman, rallying the Mustangs for four additional runs across the inning.
  • Sawitzki singled to left to send Lafontaine home, before Kendrick singled to right center to score Sawitzki for the 3-1 advantage.
  • Platt stepped to the plate and blasted a shot to left to score Baldwin and Kendrick, posting the 5-1 lead at the end of the inning.
  • Hartwick pulled the contest even at five in the top of the third, plating four, but the Mustangs regained the lead in the bottom of the inning with three runs, a second from Fish with the RBI being credited to Lafontaine.
  • Fish also recorded an RBI, sending a double to left field to plate Damani Miranda (Bronx, N.Y.) who was pitch running in the inning.
  • A triple shot by Sawitzki to right field scored Lafontaine, regaining the lead for Morrisville 8-5 after three.
  • Morrisville added to their total in the bottom of the sixth inning with two additional runs, both coming off the double shot to right center by Kendrick who had the hot bat in the double header.
  • Kendrick's double sent Brennan and Lafontaine across home plate, extending Morrisville's lead to 10-5.
  • The Mustangs held Hartwick scoreless in the top of the seventh to secure the non-conference win.
  • Sawitzki and Kendrick led the efforts at the plate with their 3-for-4 performance, combining for five RBI's and two runs scored.
  • Lafontaine added two RBI's with her 1-for-3 effort, while Platt also recorded two RBI's after going 1-for-4 from the plate.
  • Kendall Darling (Lacona, N.Y.) started the contest on the mound and threw two innings, allowing three earned runs and collecting two strike outs, before Kaylor returned to the mound for the remainder of the contest, recording three strikeouts across five innings for the win.
  • Kaylor also allowed just one earned run in 20 at bats.

  • Morrisville opens SUNYAC play on Friday, traveling to Fredonia State for a double-header before meeting Buffalo State on Saturday.
