Morrisville drops home opener with SUNY Poly

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Host SUNY Morrisville softball opened the 2025 home slate Thursday afternoon, falling in double-header action to visiting SUNY Poly by final scores of 5-1 and 4-3 at the softball complex in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville softball opened the 2025 home schedule Thursday afternoon against nearby SUNY Poly, falling in double-header action by final scores of 5-1 and 4-3 in Morrisville.
  • In game one of the day's action, Poly took the 3-0 lead in the top of the first before adding a run apiece in the third and fourth innings to secure the win.
  • The Wildcats shot a single up the middle to score two, before adding a third run on a passed ball later in the frame.
  • Morrisville was able to get one run back in the bottom of the inning after lead off Lindsey Fish (Freeville, N.Y.) rifled a double to center field, before scoring on a throwing error as Callie Lafontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.) reached base on balls.
  • SUNY Poly added a run to their lead in the top of the fourth, capitalizing on back-to-back fielding errors by the Mustangs, before collecting their fifth tally with a homer over the left field fence.
  • Despite throwing the loss, Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) recorded her 100th collegiate strikeout on the mound for the Mustangs in the first, registering a total six across the contest.
  • Isabella Gaskins (Binghamton, N.Y.) led Morrisville with a 2-for-3 effort from the plate, while Fish put together a 2-for-4 performance.
  • In the night cap, the Wildcats took a 4-0 lead over the Mustangs in the top of the fourth before holding off a midgame rally by the hosts to capture the 4-3 lead.
  • SUNY Poly took the 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a triple shot to right field, scoring one, and followed with two more runs in the top of the second for the 3-0 lead after two.
  • The Wildcats extended the lead to four in the top of the fourth with their second homer of the day, but Morrisville rallied in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own.
  • Hannah Brennan (Trumansburg, N.Y.) singled to right field before advancing to second on a fielding error, scoring Gaskins and Lafontaine who both reached on single hits earlier in the inning.
  • Morrisville added a third run to their totals in the bottom of the fifth, as Emery Sawitzki (Amsterdam, N.Y.) scored Fish with her shot towards third.
  • The Mustangs had a quick three-and-out in the top of the seventh and led off with a walk from Sara Brefka (East Syracuse, N.Y.) before Fish placed a sac bunt perfectly down the left line to advance Brefka to second.
  • SUNY Poly though, closed the inning with a ground out to short to secure the win.
  • Fish, Brennan and Brefka each went 1-for-2 from the plate for Morrisville, with Brennan posting two RBI's.
  • Kendall Darling (Lacona, N.Y.) threw four innings and struck out two, recording the loss on the mound, before being relieved by Kaylor for the final three innings. Kaylor didn't allow a Poly hit in her time on the mound.

  • Morrisville returns to the field next Wednesday, hosting Hartwick College. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Morrisville.
