Penalties costly in Mustang overtime loss to Poly

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville men's lacrosse team fell in their home opener to nearby SUNY Poly Wednesday afternoon, dropping the overtime decision by a 10-9 final score on Drake Field in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville men's lacrosse led 6-3 at the halftime break but were unable to hold on as visiting SUNY Poly handed the Mustangs the 10-9 overtime loss Wednesday afternoon on Drake Field in Morrisville.
  • Penalties proved costly for the Mustangs, who landed in the box a total of nine times throughout the contest, resulting in five man-up scores, including the overtime winner just 20 seconds into the extra frame.
  • Trailing 6-3 after the first half, visiting SUNY Poly scored three unanswered tallies in the second half of the third quarter to tie the contest at seven with 2:33 to go, before a score at the buzzer by Kyan Dohn (New Brunswick, N.J.) made it a 8-7 Mustang advantage after three.
  • Poly evened the contest nearly 1:30 in before adding their fourth extra man score at the 11 minute mark to take their first lead of the contest, a 9-8 advantage.
  • Morrisville evened the score at 4:34 on a crease stick by Nicholas DeNicola (Southold, N.Y.), fighting off a persistent Wildcat attack for the remainder of regulation.
  • SUNY Poly won the faceoff at the start of the extra frame, and within seconds, Morrisville was whistled for a push, giving the Wildcats the extra man for the ninth time, and they wasted no time, capitalizing with the game winner 11 seconds later.
  • Dohn and Daniel Squires (Aquebogue, N.Y.) each posted three goals and an assist in the Mustang efforts, while senior Curtis Robitaille (Endicott, N.Y.) dished out four assists.
  • Blake Dunton (Middlesex, N.Y.) registered 15 saves in the loss between the pipes for the hosts.
  • Payton Thomas led Poly with four goals and an assist, netting the overtime score, while fellow attackman Kai Hew collected three goals and assisted another.
  • Ian Short notched two tallies to go along with five assists, while teammate Joseph VanZandt picked up the win in net with 12 stops.

  • Morrisville heads to Alfred State for a Saturday non-conference matchup in Alfred. Faceoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. on the Pioneers campus.
