Morrisville men open SUNYAC play with win over Canton

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville men's basketball team opened SUNYAC play Friday night in Morrisville against SUNY Canton, coming away with an 88-80 victory as five netted double digits in the win.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • The SUNY Morrisville men's basketball team posted an 88-80 SUNYAC win Friday night over visiting SUNY Canton, withstanding a late Roo rally, after a facility delay saw the game paused for nearly 30 minutes in Morrisville.
  • Both teams battled back and forth through the opening minutes of the first half and were tied at 18 before needing to pause the contest, and after returning, Morrisville put together a 9-0 spurt to send the game into the halftime period with a 41-28 host lead.
  • The Mustangs built up a 17-point lead with 12 minutes remaining in the second, but Canton chipped away cutting the deficit to four with under two minutes to go.
  • A layup from Avion Grainger (Syracuse, N.Y.) with 1:46 showing on the clock rallied the Mustangs for a 9-0 run, building up a double-digit lead with under a minute remaining, sealing the win for the hosts.
  • Jalyn Moorehead (Rochester, N.Y.) led Morrisville with an 18-point effort off the bench, hitting three from long range, while Jacob Works (Liverpool, N.Y.) chipped in 15 to go along with four rebounds, nailing all five attempts from the free throw line.
  • Kaelem Haskins (Liverpool, N.Y.) netted 11, adding eight boards, six assists and three steals to his tallies across the night.
  • AJ Burnett (Syracuse, N.Y.) posted 11 alongside Grainger who added six rebounds to his totals.
  • Jahdeuir Reese posted 16 points and dive rebounds for Canton in the loss, with teammates Malaki Smith and Chris Nastasi each adding 15 points and five boards.
 
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
 
  • Morrisville will host Oswego State at 4 p.m. Saturday in their second of SUNYAC weekend action.
  • The game will serve as a memorial game for former men's basketball student-athlete Hunter Kowaleski, with all donations benefiting the New York State Sheriff Association Children's Summer Camp fund.
