Mustang rally stopped short in loss to Hartwick

Box Score ONEONTA, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville men's basketball team rallied from nearly a 20-point deficit in the second half of Tuesday night's non-conference action on the road at Hartwick, but the host Hawks pulled out the 96-87 win behind their effort from long range.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville men's basketball rallied from a 19-point second half deficit Tuesday night but were unable to overcome the host Hartwick Hawks as they fell 96-87 in non-conference action.
  • Morrisville trailed by eight at the half before Hartwick came out of the locker room and hit three straight threes to set the Mustangs back 17 early on in the second.
  • The Mustangs were able to cut the deficit to nine with under two minutes to go, but Hartwick was able to secure the win with key free throws in the closing seconds.
  • Morrisville dominated play in the paint, outgaining Hartwick 56-22, and were able to take advantage of fast break opportunities 35-8, but it was the hosts that dominated shooting from long range as they drained 15-of-28 total attempts from beyond the arc across the night.
  • Jacob Works (Liverpool, N.Y.) led the Mustangs with 17 points, adding four assists and three rebounds, while teammate Bruce Wingate (Liverpool, N.Y.) contributed another 16 off the bench to go along with nine boards and three assists.
  • Kaelem Haskins (Liverpool, N.Y.) added 12 points, assisting five and collecting six rebounds, with Tony Borges (Auburn, N.Y.) putting up 10 points in the efforts to round out the Mustang leader board.
  • Mike Gitz led Hartwick with 29 points, hitting 6-of-10 from long range while teammates Robby Lucas and Kesean Leonard each added 17 points, a combined five additional three-pointers.

  • Morrisville will open SUNYAC action Friday night as they host SUNY Canton in a 7:30 p.m. league tip off.
