WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • The SUNY Morrisville football program honored its senior class Saturday prior to kick off for the final time on Drake Field in Morrisville, and despite a tough effort on the gridiron, fell 21-7 to visiting St. John Fisher University in Empire 8 action.
  • The Mustangs were able to hold the Cardinals scoreless in the opening quarter, but a short punt into the wind set up the visitors on the Morrisville 27-yard line to start their scoring drive.
  • Fisher was able to reach the end zone in just five plays, a four-yard pass from Mason Lister to Ethan Curtis for the score early in the second.
  • Late in the quarter, Morrisville pulled the game even with a four-play, 17 yard drive that was capped off by a nine-yard run through the middle by Isaac Sylvain (Schenectady, N.Y.).
  • With Fisher threatening to move the ball downfield, senior Dillon English (Webster, N.Y.) stepped in front of Lister's pass for the interception, returning the ball 21 yards to set up the scoring drive.
  • Fisher, though, moved the ball in the final two minutes of the opening half, regaining the lead at the break with a 19-yard scoring pass play to Jackson Cusack for the 14-7 advantage.
  • The Cardinals added one final score at the 5:06 mark, a one-yard run over center from Ryan Whitney to complete the afternoon's scoring and capture the win.
  • Logan Watson (Lowville, N.Y.) put together a 14-for-24 performance for 171 yards on the day, hitting senior wide out Xavier Gaines (Pomona, N.Y.) four times for a team high 66 yards and freshman Lawrence Duncan IV (Bath, N.Y.) another four for 39 yards.
  • Sylvain collected 99 net yards on 19 carries for the Mustangs in the running game.
  • Defensively, senior Eric Sparkman (Syracuse, N.Y.) registered a collegiate best performance, recording 16 total tackles, 10 solo stops, adding a forced fumble, a pass break up and an interception returned for 18 yards.
  • Kahlil Terry (Binghamton, N.Y.) added 12 stops while English collected eight tackles to go along with the interception and a quarterback hurry.
  • Morrisville picked off St. John Fisher three times on the day with a third interception coming from Scotty Howard (Binghamton, N.Y.) in the end zone to prevent the Cardinal score.
  • Senior defensive lineman Jonathan Anacreon (Nesconset, N.Y.) added six stops.
