Beaver leads Morrisville field hockey in first win of season

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville field hockey team opened the 2024 season campaign in convincing fashion Saturday, toppling visiting Elmira College by a 7-0 final score behind the play of their freshmen class.

THE BASICS:
  • Final Score: Morrisville 7, Elmira 0 (halftime: Morrisville 4-0)
  • Location: Drake Field, Morrisville, N.Y.
  • Records: Morrisville 1-0, Elmira 0-1

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Freshman Melissa Beaver (Gransville, N.Y.) scored three times and assisted another two to lead host SUNY Morrisville field hockey to a season opening 7-0 victory over visiting Elmira College Saturday afternoon.
  • Starting off with a weather delay, Morrisville worked possession early on, netting their first tally just 6:07 in on a penalty corner play.
  • Beaver sent the corner insert to the top of the circle to a waiting Kylee Noyes (Castle Creek, N.Y.) who rifled the drive into the back of the cage for the Mustangs first score of the '24 season.
  • Just over six minutes later Beaver added her first career score with the rebound score from a Noyes drive, again on the corner play, extending the hosts lead to two after the first.
  • In the second quarter, the Mustangs extended their lead with a goal from Jazlyn Leet (Richford, N.Y.) who was fed the ball from the top of the circle from Macie May (Barker, N.Y.) before dodging the Elmira keeper for the short chip in.
  • Beaver collected her second of the half at the 25:36 mark, dribbling in from the top of the circle for the wide open tally.
  • May extended the lead to 5-0 for the hosts 37 minutes into the third quarter, scoring the left post sweep off the short pass from Beaver.
  • Beaver would compete the hat trick seconds before the end of the third, sweeping her third tally into the back of the cage on the left post. Noyes was credited with the assist.
  • Mikaela Iza (West Babylon, N.Y.) completed all scoring with her clean up tally on the mouth of the goal at 54:38.
  • Emmaly Noeller (Canastota, N.Y.) earned the shut out with her nine stops for the Mustangs across the contest, including five in the final quarter of action.

WHAT'S NEXT:

  • Morrisville looks to extend their quick start to the season as they host St. Joseph University (Conn.) on Monday in a non-conference match on Drake Field in Morrisville.
