Morrisville men unable to hold off fourth quarter rally

CASTINE, ME – The SUNY Morrisville men's lacrosse team fell in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action Saturday afternoon to host Maine Maritime Academy, unable to hold off the fourth quarter rally by the Mariners in the 16-13 victory in Castine, Maine.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville men's lacrosse fell in conference play Saturday afternoon to host Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine, as the host Mariners made a fourth quarter comeback to snatch the league win by a 16-13 final score.
  • It was a back-and-forth battle through a majority of the contest until the Mariners put together a four-goal run in the fourth to pull and stay ahead of the Mustangs in the final frame for the win.
  • Tied at 10 heading into the final quarter of action, Maine Maritime collected two quick tallies to take the 12-10 lead just five minutes in, before adding two more to open the advantage to four.
  • Dean Mohammed (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) brought the Mustangs within three with his tally off the dish from Zach Nestor (Manlius, N.Y.), but the Mariners answered right back with an unassisted score seconds later.
  • Dante Patriarco (Cortland, N.Y.) again made it a three-goal game with 31 seconds remaining, Nestor finding the fellow senior for the tally, but Maritime answered back.
  • Nestor connected with Mohammed a second time on the extra man to make it a three-goal game, but the Mustangs ran out of time as Maine Maritime posted the NAC win.
  • Patriarco finished with five goals and an assist to lead the Mustangs, while Mohammed collected four points behind his three goals and assist.
  • Nestor added two scores, assisting three others, while snagging five ground balls, with James Graizzaro (Hillside, N.J.) collected two.
  • Michael Avgenikos (Cazenovia, N.Y.) collected 10 ground balls in the Mustang efforts, winning 11 from the center x, while Eric Sparkman (Syracuse, N.Y.) caused two turnovers for the Morrisville defense.
  • Nathan Weise (Rochester, N.Y.) turned aside 24, 14 in the opening half of action.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
 
  • Morrisville returns to the field tomorrow, playing Husson University in Bangor to wrap up the weekend NAC action.
