Nestor records record breaking performance in win over Thomas

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Senior attackman Zach Nestor (Manlius, N.Y.) led the host SUNY Morrisville men's lacrosse team to a 22-3 win Sunday afternoon behind a three-time record breaking performance in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) win over Thomas College on Drake Field in Morrisville.

THE BASICS:
  • Final Score: Morrisville 22, Thomas College 3
  • Location: Drake Field, Morrisville, N.Y.
  • Records: Morrisville 7-7, 6-1 NAC; Thomas 1-8, 1-5 NAC

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • SUNY Morrisville senior attackman Zach Nestor (Manlius, N.Y.) set two new single game marks for the Mustang record books and wrote his name at the time of the all-time scoring record in program history, as he led the hosts to a dominating 22-3 league win over visiting Thomas College Sunday afternoon in Morrisville.
  • Nestor collected a goal and 16 assists across the contest, setting new record marks for assists in a single game and points in a single game, both records he tied a year ago.
  • Alongside his single game effort, the senior added his final assist on the day to fellow senior Willie Burns (Cutchogue, N.Y.) who buried the dish to give Nestor the record held by former Mustang Nick Geswaldo (Lafayette, N.Y.) since 2019.
  • Across his career in the Mustang uniform the senior has posted 82 goals and assisted 176 others for 261 total points.
  • Both of his marks set today for single game tallies also are top marks in all of Division III across the NCAA.
  • Morrisville opened all scoring on the afternoon in similar fashion as just 24 hours prior, with Dante Patriarco (Cortland, N.Y.) posting the quick tally off the dish from Dean Mohammed (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.).
  • Within minutes, Nestor connected with Chris Stancarone (Levittown, N.Y.) who posted his first of four on the day, before Mohammed collected one off the feed from Kyan Dohn (East Brunswick, N.Y.).
  • Nestor connected with Patriarco for his second on the extra man midway through the quarter, before Curtis Robitaille (Endwell, N.Y.) buried the one-timer off the pass from Stancarone for the 5-0 lead after the opening quarter.
  • Stancarone added another at the 9:49 mark of the second before Thomas was able to put one up on the board, but the Mustangs went on a 3-0 spurt to lead 9-2 at the break.
  • Nestor had six assists at the half.
  • In the third quarter, the senior connected with Mohammed for three straight, opening the host lead to 11-2, before adding another as he hit Cade Moss (New Hartford, N.Y.) for the tally to close out the quarter.
  • In the fourth, Nestor found three straight Mustangs to widen the gap to 14 before John Carter (East Syracuse, N.Y.) posted the unassisted score at the 10:01 mark.
  • Thomas broke up the Mustang eight-goal streak with one at the 9:25 mark, before Morrisville closed out the contest with five straight scores, four of which Nestor was involved with.
  • His lone score came at the 7:15 mark as he rifled the feed from Mohammed into the back of the net, before Daniel Squires (Aquebogue, N.Y.) caused the turnover and in transition posted the long stick score.
  • Nestor hit Burns with 2:22 to go to make it a 20-3 ball game and one point shy of tying the all-time points record, before finding Stancarone a minute later to net his 260th point of his career.
  • The home career of two seniors became that much more memorable with 40 seconds to go as Nestor found Burns on the back-door cut for the one-timer and record breaking point.
  • Burns finished with two goals alongside Carter, Patriarco and Moss, while Stancarone added another four to go along with one assist.
  • Mohammed finished with a career high seven points, scoring five and assisting another two.
  • Justin Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y.) added a goal to go along with his four ground balls and four caused turnovers to lead the defense in the win.
  • Nathan Weise (Rochester, N.Y.) picked up 15 saves across three quarters of action to earn the win in net, before Blake Dunton (Middlesex, N.Y.) collected one in the final quarter of action.

WHAT'S NEXT:

  • Morrisville heads to Cobleskill on Wednesday to wrap up the regular season and will await seeding for the postseason tournament as announced later by the league office.
