Morrisville topples Johnson for first NAC win of season

JOHNSON, VERMONT – The SUNY Morrisville softball team picked up their first league win Saturday midst heavy rain and wet weather conditions, scoring six runs in the top of the seventh to put away the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory with a final 10-2 score in Johnson, Vermont.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville softball used scoring across four innings of Saturday's action to put away the host Johnson Badgers, collecting their first league win as they registered the 10-2 victory on the road.
  • Isabella Gaskins (Binghamton, N.Y.) and Celeste Baldwin (Bainbridge, N.Y.) each collected a 3-for-5 performance from the plate to lead the Mustangs, while teammate Emery Sawitzki (Amsterdam, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • All three registered one run apiece and a double, while Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) added two runs to the Mustang totals.
  • Baldwin also collected a triple to add to her totals on the day.
  • Kaylor picked up the win on the mound, throwing a complete game while allowing just one hit and two earned runs, recording a season high eight strikeouts in 32 batters faced.
  • Morrisville posted one run in the top of the second before the hosts took the 2-1 lead after two innings of action.
  • The Mustangs, though, reached home twice in the top of the third, adding another in the following inning to take a 4-2 lead after four.
  • Scoreless fifth and sixth innings sent the Mustangs into the top of the seventh with the 4-2 advantage, and with hot bats, Morrisville added to their lead with six unanswered runs to open the gap to an eight-run lead.
  • Morrisville's defense prevented Johnson from scoring, holding on for the league win.
