Third quarter blizzard leads to 13-3 Mustang win over Marywood

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville men's lacrosse team posted six third quarter scores Wednesday evening, collecting the 13-3 non-conference win over the visiting Marywood University Pacers in winter-like conditions on Drake Field in Morrisville.

THE BASICS:
  • Team Scores: Morrisville 13, Marywood 3
  • Location: Drake Field, Morrisville, N.Y.
  • Records: Morrisville 1-5, Marywood 1-6

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville created an offensive whiteout in the third quarter of Wednesday night's action on Drake Field in Morrisville, as the host Mustangs registered a 13-3 non-conference win over visiting Marywood University for their first of the season.
  • Battling tough winds and snow squall winter conditions, the Mustangs held a 4-3 lead over the Pacers at the break, before breaking out for nine straight tallies in the second to earn the victory.
  • Marywood opened scoring just under two minutes in in the first quarter Wednesday, before Morrisville's Dante Patriarco (Cortland, N.Y.) responded to even the contest at one at the 7:11 mark.
  • A James Graizzaro (Hillside, N.J.) goal evened the contest at two after the first quarter action.
  • Chris Stancarone (Levittown, N.Y.) gave the Mustangs the edge four minutes into the second quarter, 3-2, but Marywood would collect an evening score at 3:28.
  • Zach Nestor (Manlius, N.Y.) put the Mustangs ahead 4-3 at the halftime break with his quick stick off the dish from Curtis Robitaille (Endwell, N.Y.).
  • It was all Morrisville in the second half as they exploded for six third quarter tallies, including a game second from Stancarone just over two minutes in to kick off the 9-0 second half run.
  • Nestor buried a second of the night off the feed from Robitaille, before Daniel Squires (Aquebogue, N.Y.) forced the turnover on the face-off and buried the ball for his first tally of the season a mere 12 seconds following Nestor's goal.
  • Willie Burns (Cutchogue, N.Y.) popped the ball to a wide-open Cade Moss (New Hartford, N.Y.) on the doorstep of the crease to expand the host lead to five midway through the quarter, before Nestor and Graizzaro each added another to expand the host lead to seven heading into the final frame.
  • Patriarco posted the extra man goal early in the fourth off a cross zone pass from Nestor, before Burns added his own just over a minute later with the feed from behind from Nestor.
  • Kyan Dohn (East Brunswick, N.J.) added the final score for the Mustangs at the 5:44 mark, opening the gap to 10 to secure the win.
  • Squires and Nestor controlled the ground ball game for the hosts, each collecting seven, while Squires added five caused turnovers to his totals on the night.
  • Gabe Mathews (Sharon, Conn.) picked up his first collegiate win in net, making nine stops across 60 minutes of action.

WHAT'S NEXT:

  • Morrisville returns to the field one week from today, traveling to Utica University for a 7 p.m. final non-conference match before North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play begins on the 30th.
