Morrisville outgains Utica in second half, falls short in crosstown outing

UTICA, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville men's lacrosse team doubled up the host Utica College Pioneers 8-4 in the second half of Tuesday afternoon's non-conference action in Utica, but fell short as the hosts held on for a 15-10 win.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville men's lacrosse outgained the host Utica University Pioneers 8-4 in the second half of Tuesday's crosstown action, but it wasn't enough as the hosts held on for the non-conference win by a 15-10 final in Utica.
  • Utica opened with the first four tallies of the day before an extra man score by senior Zach Nestor (Manlius, N.Y.) with 25 seconds left in the first quarter put the Mustangs on the board.
  • The Pioneers dominated the second quarter to build an 11-2 advantage midway through the outing, allowing just one Mustang score that came at the 4:09 mark from Dean Mohammed (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) off the feed from Nestor.
  • After three tallies by the hosts to open the third quarter, Morrisville posted back-to-back extra man tallies, the first from Dante Patriarco (Cortland, N.Y.) at 6:15 after the dish from Kyan Dohn (East Brunswick, N.J.) before Chris Stancarone (Levittown, N.Y.) added the third man-up score with 25 seconds to go in the frame.
  • Mohammed notched his second early in the fourth, before Utica answered, but the Mustangs made a late push with five straight scores.
  • Stancarone collected his second to cut into the lead, before the Mustangs posted three within three minutes time to shrink the gap to six.
  • A fourth extra man tally with 1:27 to go from Curtis Robitaille (Endwell, N.Y.) made it a five-goal game, but the Mustangs ran out of time as the Pioneers escaped the late rally with the win.
  • Six collected goals for Morrisville as Nestor led the way with two goals and four assists.
  • Patriarco, Stancarone and Mohammed each tallied two scores apiece to contribute to the Mustang efforts, while Robitaille and James Graizzaro (Hillside, N.J.) added one as well.
  • Daniel Squires (Aquebogue, N.Y.) collected five ground balls and caused two turnovers to lead the Mustangs defensively.
  • Gabe Mathews (Sharon, Conn.) registered 14 saves in the opening half to record the loss in net for Morrisville, before Nathan Weise (Rochester, N.Y.) added to the Mustang efforts with 15 in the second half of play.

  • Morrisville returns to the field Saturday, opening North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Drake Field as they host Vermont State University – Lyndon at 1 p.m.
