Softball earns split with Chargers in Saturday action

LANCASTER, PA – The SUNY Morrisville softball team forced host Lancaster Bible into extra innings in game one, falling 6-5 in eight innings, before battling back in the second to earn the split with an 11-5 decision in game two in Lancaster Saturday afternoon.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville softball split non-conference action with host Lancaster Bible College Saturday afternoon, wrapping up spring break action with a 3-5 record on the young season.
  • Morrisville rallied for four runs in the top of the sixth and held a one-run lead until the bottom of the seventh, before the hosts forced the extra inning to earn the victory with a walk-off RBI to center field.
  • Lancaster Bible took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third, extending it to three in the bottom of the fifth on an error.
  • Three straight single hits loaded the bases for the Mustangs before Emery Sawitzki (Amsterdam, N.Y.) stepped to the plate and rifled the double to left field to score Sara Brefka (East Syracuse, N.Y.) and Sophie Keehle (Conklin, N.Y.), cutting the Charger lead to 3-2.
  • Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) registered an RBI on the ensuing bat to score Callie Lafontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.) with her sac fly to left field, before a hard shot back to the pitching mound by Celeste Baldwin (Bainbridge, N.Y.) saw Sawitzki put the Mustangs ahead 4-3 at the end of the inning.
  • Lancaster evened it at four in the bottom of the inning, scoring on a fielding error in right field.
  • Morrisville would go back out in front in the top of the seventh inning as Jessica Budd (Fairport, N.Y.) poked one to left field before a single by Brefka scored Budd for the go ahead 5-4 lead.
  • Back-to-back errors by the Mustangs in the bottom of the inning saw Lancaster pull the contest even at five, sending the game into extra frames.
  • The hosts claimed the win in the bottom of the inning with an RBI to center field.
  • Brefka led the Mustangs at the plate going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Baldwin added a 2-for-4 performance for an RBI.
  • Sawitzki was 1-for-4 with two RBI's and a run, as four additional Mustangs posted hits in the contest.
  • Kaylor collected nine strikeouts in the loss on the mound, allowing two earned runs in 35 batters faced.
 
GAME TWO:
  • In the second of the day's doubleheader, Morrisville scored nine unanswered runs in the top of the seventh inning to erase a three-run deficit and claim the 11-5 victory.
  • Morrisville put their first run on the board in the top of the first, as Brefka doubled to score Lafontaine who reached second on her leadoff single.
  • Lancaster would answer in the bottom of the second with four-runs, loading the bases twice on two hits.
  • The Chargers added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, before the Mustangs got one back in the top of the sixth.
  • Keehle singed to right before Lafontaine shot one to center field.
  • Brefka reached on a fielder's choice and collected the RBI as Keehle reached home to cut the deficit to 5-2 after six.
  • Morrisville's defense allowed just one hit in the bottom of the inning, leaving one on base for the Chargers.
  • Kaylor led off the seventh for the Mustangs with a single to center field, before Baldwin reached base on balls.
  • Both stole to advance bases, before Isabella Gaskins (Binghamton, N.Y.) reached on an error by the first baseman – scoring pitch runner Kaylie Kendrick (Johnson City, N.Y.).
  • After a single to left to score Baldwin, Morrisville evened it at five with a Gaskin run.
  • Morrisville would then take their first lead since the opening inning on a triple blast to center field by Lafontaine to score two.
  • Lafontaine would reach home before Baldwin doubled to right field to score two on base, reaching home on the passed ball as Morrisville carried the 11-5 lead into the bottom of the inning.
  • After reaching on a single, Lancaster hit into a double-play on the ensuing at bat before the Mustangs defense collected the win with a pop up put out to end the contest.
  • Lafontaine finished 3-for-4 from the plate with two RBI's and two runs scored, while Abbie Platt (Oneonta, N.Y.) also collected two hits with her 2-for-4 effort for an RBI.
  • Baldwin went 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI's, with Brefka adding two RBI's on her effort at the plate.
  • Baldwin threw the first four innings for the Mustangs, striking out two while allowing four earned runs.
  • Gaskins collected the win on the mound with her two-inning pitching effort, striking out one, allowing just one hit, before Kaylor closed out the contest in the seventh with her two hits allowed.

  • Morrisville will return to the field March 25, hosting Potsdam for a double header at 3 p.m. in Morrisville.
