All around team effort leads to SUNYAC win over Potsdam

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville men's basketball team picked up their first SUNYAC win of the 2024-25 season Saturday, downing visiting SUNY Potsdam 78-64 on the Mustangs home court in Morrisville in an all around team effort.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Thirteen different Mustangs contributed buckets to a 78-64 win over visiting Potsdam Saturday afternoon, as host SUNY Morrisville men's basketball picked up their first league win of the 2024 season.
  • Both teams played back-and-fourth through the opening eight minutes of the contest, until a layup from Jalyn Moorehead (Rochester, N.Y.) sparked a 10-2 run by the Mustangs to open an eight lead halfway through the opening half.
  • Potsdam was able to cut the deficit to four, but a three by Avion Grainger in the corner ignited another 10-1 run by the hosts, increasing their lead to 31-22 at the break.
  • A three from Grainger moments into the second half extended the host advantage to double-digits, a deficit that Potsdam struggled to overcome as Morrisville increased their lead to as many as 23 late in the final period.
  • Yvan Fils-Aime (Dix Hills, N.Y.) led the way with 18 points off the bench for the Mustangs, hitting 7-of-8 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from the top of the key.
  • Fils-Aime also grabbed a team high seven boards alongside Jordan Coard (Jamaica, N.Y.) ho collected seven as well, two on the offensive glass.
  • Grainger finished with 13 points for the Mustangs, assisting three, while hitting 2-of-2 from long range.
  • Jacob Works (Liverpool, N.Y.) added eight points and five rebounds, with teammate CJ McCullum (Bronx, N.Y.) dishing out a team best five assists.
  • Four netted double-figures in Potsdam's efforts, including Mike Hancock who had 12 alongside teammates Walter deFreitas and John Blackwood.
  • Mohammed Sylla had 10 points and four rebounds.
  • Morrisville dominated the Bears on the glass, outgaining Potsdam 48-29 in rebounding, including a 16-12 effort on the offensive side of the ball.

  • Morrisville will host Keuka on Saturday, Dec. 14 to wrap up the first semester action before the holiday break.
