Christmas' career high nets Morrisville women second straight win

ELMIRA, N.Y. – Freshman Kieonna Christmas (Fultonville, N.Y.) posted a collegiate high 21 points Saturday afternoon, sending the SUNY Morrisville women's basketball team into the holiday break with a 58-51 win over Elmira College in non-conference action in Elmira.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville women's basketball collected their second straight win Saturday afternoon as freshman Kieonna Christmas (Fultonville, N.Y.) notched a collegiate high 21 points to send the Mustangs into the holiday break with the 58-51 victory over host Elmira College in Elmira.
  • Christmas, who registered the double-double with 10 rebounds, added five steals and hit 50% from the floor to lead the mustangs.
  • Anyssia Ingersoll (Mexico, N.Y.) added 15 points to the win, assisting two and collecting three steals, while Hannah Bonczkowski (Otego, N.Y.) netted 11 points to go along with four steals.
  • Elmira had a team high 15 from Laura Bogota, while getting another 10 points from Mallory Welty.
  • Amarionah Dixon led the Soaring Eagles on the boards with 11 rebounds.
  • After a slow start in the opening quarter that saw both teams net single digits, Morrisville used a 12-2 run over the second to build up a double-digit lead at the break, holding the 25-14 advantage at halftime.
  • Elmira was able to cut the deficit to seven midway through the third quarter, but Morrisville closed out the frame with a 6-2 run to lead 38-27 heading into the fourth.
  • The hosts cut into the Mustang lead in the fourth and pulled within three after nailing the long ball from the top of the key, but Bonczkowski returned the favor with one of her own to regain the six point advantage for Morrisville with just over a minute to go.
  • Elmira made it a four-point game with 53 seconds left, but Ingersoll hit a three to create the seven-point gap that held up for the win.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
 
  • Morrisville heads into the break with a 4-4 overall record and will return to the court January 3 as they had to SUNY Geneseo before resuming league play against Buffalo State on the 7th.
