Works ties collegiate high in loss at Houghton

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Sophomore Jacob Works (Liverpool, N.Y.) led the visiting SUNY Morrisville men's basketball efforts Thursday night in the Mustangs season opener on the road at Houghton, netting 26 points in a 81-65 loss in Houghton.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville out gained host Houghton College 37-31 in the second half, but couldn't erase the deficit the hosts built up in the first, falling in the season opener by a 65-81 final score in Houghton.
  • Sophomore Jacob Works (Liverpool, N.Y.) led the Mustangs with a 26 point effort, tying his collegiate high, while contributing four rebounds and two steals to the Morrisville efforts across the contest.
  • Chris Merilus (Nyack, N.Y.) added 12 points and five rebounds to the Mustang totals, while Yvan Fils-Aime (Dix Hills, N.Y.) contributed eight points to go along with a team high six rebounds.
  • CJ McCollum (Bronx, N.Y.) dished out five assists, while recording four steals for the Mustang back court.
  • Houghton jumped out to a 50-28 lead at the break, fueled by a 45.5% effort from long range that saw the Highlanders drain 10 three-pointers.
  • Morrisville opened the scoring out gaining Houghton 10-2 in the first five minutes of the contest, but the hosts chipped away tying the contest at 12 with a three, before taking the lead on two free throws.
  • The hosts kicked off a 26-4 run with a three from Christian Sage, leading by as many as 24 across the remainder of the first half.
  • Morrisville was able to stall the Houghton offense in the opening five minutes of the second half, as they chipped away at the host lead to cut into the deficit.
  • An 11-0 run by the Mustangs made it a 47-64 game with 10 minutes showing on the clock, and less than a minute later trimmed it to 12, but Houghton was able to extend the gap across the remainder of the contest to capture the non-league win.
  • Sage led the hosts with 25 points, draining seven from beyond the arc, while Jajuan Preaster recorded the double-double with 10 points and 17 total rebounds.
  • Preaster also had six assists in the win, with another 10 points coming from James Wang to round out the Highlander leader board.

  • Morrisville returns to the court Saturday, hosting Vermont State – Lyndon in the opening round of the Mustangs Tip-Off Tournament in Morrisville. Tip is scheduled for 5:30 PM.
