Volleyball claims win in five over Kings

WILKES-BARRE, PA – The SUNY Morrisville women's volleyball team led two sets to none before host Kings College battled back to force a fifth set, but the visiting Mustangs were too much of a force for the Monarchs at the net as they claimed the 3-2 match win in Wilkes-Barre Saturday afternoon.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville upped their record to 6-10 with a 3-2 match win over host Kings College Saturday afternoon, fueled by a .370 hitting effort from junior Emily Huppee (Liberty Hill, Tex.) at the net.
  • Morrisville opened with wins in the first two sets of the match, taking a 2-0 lead behind set scores of 25-15 and 25-16, but Kings battled back to force a deciding fifth set to determine the match winner.
  • In the fifth, Kings tallied the first point with a service ace, before Morrisville's Hannah Taylor (Goshen, N.Y.) served four straight points, three kills coming off the hand of Huppee, to take a 4-1 set lead.
  • Morrisville increased their lead to 7-2 on the next rotation, before utilizing a three-point streak to open the margin to 10-4.
  • Kayci Olson (Cortland, N.Y.) held serve for three straight points, guiding the Mustangs to a 14-4 lead, before Taylor set up Keelin Baker (Vestal, N.Y.) to put away the match for the visitors and 15-5 deciding set win.
  • Taylor put up 45 assists, while Huppee threw down 27 kills, adding two aces and 11 digs to her totals.
  • Baker added a double-digit hitting effort with 14 kills.
  • Kayla Sheasby (Hood River, Ore.) led the defensive efforts with 36 digs, Olson adding another 10 to go along with her five kills.
  • Morrisville hit a match best .692 in the final set, registering 10 kills on 13 total attempts, en route to a .216 match hitting effort.

  • Morrisville returns to the court in a second match against Penn St. Harrisburg at 2 p.m. in Wilkes-Barre.
