MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville field hockey team made its debut on the new Drake Field Sunday afternoon, dropping the season opener to visiting Wittenberg University by a 7-0 final in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

• Host SUNY Morrisville saw action for the first time in 2023 Sunday afternoon and falling by a 7-0 final score to Wittenberg University, despite a solid defensive effort.
• Freshman Jenna Gutierrez (Syracuse, N.Y.) made her debut in net for the Mustangs, turning away 15 in her first collegiate outing, including nine in the opening half.
• Morrisville also got a defensive stop from Emma Plett (Grunthal, MB).
• The Mustangs held Wittenberg to just one tally in the opening quarter, a one-timer off the chip into the circle.
• The visitors added three more tallies in the second quarter, collecting their own rebound and tipping in two, to claim the 4-0 lead at the break.
• Midway through the third they added to their total, but not without the Mustangs challenging on the opposite end with shots coming from Rita Dziedzic (Goshen, N.Y.) and Jenna Wilbur (Greenwich, N.Y.).
• Wittenberg wrapped up the afternoon with two additional tallies in the final frame.
