Morrisville women set new single game mark in win over Wells

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville women's soccer team picked up their first win of the 2023 season Sunday afternoon in record fashion, firing on all cylinders as they collected a dominating 10-0 victory over visiting Wells College on Drake Field in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville picked up a big win Sunday afternoon as they dominated visiting Wells College by a 10-0 final score on Drake Field in Morrisville.
  • The 10 goals tallied by the Mustangs established a new single game mark in the record books, topping the record set in 2014 at nine.
  • In addition, Morrisville set new marks for assists and points, each established in the same contest in 2014.
  • Brianne Barnes (Waterville, N.Y.) and Callie LaFontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.) gave the Mustangs a boost in the first half with their hat trick performances, while Ava Malin (Cold Brook, N.Y.) got in on the scoring with one for a dominating 7-0 lead at the break.
  • While maintaining possession for a majority of the second half, Morrisville was able to add to their totals with three additional scores, one from back Amaya Small (Hicksville, N.Y.) and Emiko Matsumoto (Chandler, Ariz.).
  • Barnes collected another to wrap up the day with four total scores.
  • Melanie Rott (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) collected the win with one save, while appearing for 42 minutes in net.
  • Cadence Santiago (Davenport, N.Y.) made her collegiate debut, securing the win as she kept the Express off the board.
  • Morrisville's first tally came off the boot of Lafontaine as she put away the one touch from Laura Bedell (New Hartford, N.Y.) through the center of the box.
  • Within minutes, Barnes collected her first of the afternoon, cleaning up the deflection that sailed off the hands of the Express keeper.
  • Rebecca Kench (West Henrietta, N.Y.) was credited with the assist.
  • Barnes posted a second tally in the 12th minute, chipping the ball inside the right post for a 3-0 host lead, before completing the hat trick four minutes later putting away the one-timer inside the box off the thru pass from Lafontaine.
  • Lafontaine extended the lead to 5-0 with her one-touch inside the upper left corner sent into the box from Emileah Morgan (Port Byron, N.Y.).
  • Maintaining their distance, Morrisville was brought down just outside the box, lining up a free kick for Ava Malin (Cold Brook, N.Y.) who placed the ball under the crossbar on the direct kick for the tally.
  • Lafontaine sent the contest into the half with a seventh Mustang score, while completing the hat trick with her third of the day, placing the one-timer inside the left post off the lead ball from Matsumoto.
  • Morrisville picked up where they left off in the second half, with Small netting the two-touch off the centering pass from the right side of the field to the top of the box from Abby Vandewalker (Johnstown, N.Y.) for the eight goal lead at the 49 minute mark.
  • Barnes added a fourth at 65:21 as Hannah Brennan (Trumansburg, N.Y.) chipped the ball across the box to the wide open forward for the one-timer.
  • A final strike for Morrisville came from Matsumoto, who carried the ball into the box off the interception, completing the record performance for the Mustangs.
  • In addition to the single game mark established as a team, Barnes tied the record for single game points and goals, each established by Mustang alum Krista Baxter in 2014.
  • Morrisville outshot Wells 44-4 on the day, including 22-1 in shots on goal, and held the 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.

  • Morrisville returns to the field next Saturday, resuming North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play with a road match at SUNY Canton. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
