Morrisville women fall in overtime on the road at Potsdam

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville women's ice hockey team battled through extra time but fell short as host SUNY Potsdam picked up a 4-3 overtime NEWHL win Friday night in Potsdam.

THE BASICS:
  • Final Score: Morrisville 3, Potsdam 4 - Overtime
  • Location: Potsdam, N.Y.
  • Records: Morrisville 7-14-1, 3-11 NEWHL; Potsdam 10-10-0, 5-7 NEWHL

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Potsdam posted two unanswered tallies in the third and notched the game winner in extra time in a Friday night battle in NEWHL play, handing the visiting SUNY Morrisville Mustangs the 4-3 overtime loss in Potsdam.
  • A first period score by the Bears saw the Mustangs playing from behind as they entered the second frame, but a score from hometown favorite Alana McDonald (Potsdam, N.Y.) 1:10 into the period pulled Morrisville even and sparked three straight tallies by the visitors.
  • Hailee Easson (Okotoks, Alta.) gave the Mustangs the 2-1 advantage with a power play score 7:37 into the second, before Rhys Brown (Kemptville, Ont.) added one of her own 5:30 into the third for the 3-1 Morrisville lead.
  • Within minutes, though, Potsdam would cut the lead to one midway through, before netting the equalizer on a power play at the 16:31 mark to knot the game at three.
  • Potsdam pulled their goaltender for the extra skater in the closing minute, but Morrisville was able to keep the Bears off the board and force the extra time.
  • Maggie Jones (Marystown, N.L.) turned away three attempts by Potsdam in the opening minutes of the extra time, but a costly penalty on the Mustangs gave the hosts the slight advantage where they capitalized with the sudden victory score for the league win.
  • Jones finished with 32 saves in the loss.

WHAT'S NEXT:

  • Morrisville will return to the ice February 17 as they host the Bears in the final of the three-game series. Faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Morrisville.
