Men's lacrosse opens season with win over Utica

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – SUNY Morrisville men's lacrosse opened the 2023 season campaign Wednesday afternoon on their home field in Morrisville, netting nine first half scores as they collected the 10-6 non-league win over cross-town opponent Utica University.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville had six collect goals Wednesday afternoon as they recorded a season opening 10-6 win over cross-town opponent Utica University on Drake Field in Morrisville.
  • The Mustangs led 4-2 after the opening quarter netting the first three tallies of the contest.
  • Nicholas DeNicola (Southold, N.Y.) picked up his first collegiate score a mere 16 seconds into the contest off the feed from Luke Strong (Rochester, N.Y.) to give the Mustangs the 1-0 advantage.
  • Within minutes Strong added one of his own, an unassisted tally at the 11:27 mark, before Zach Nestor (Manlius, N.Y.) found Dante Patriarco (Cortland, N.Y.) for the rifle at 8:21.
  • Utica was able to put one on the board, but a second strike from Patriarco regained the three goal lead for the hosts with 3:26 to go in the opening frame.
  • The Pioneers put one more in the back of the net before the end of the quarter to trail by two heading into the second, but the Mustangs rattled off five straight to claim a 9-2 lead early on in the quarter.
  • Evan Kistner (Fulton, N.Y.) posted his first of the 2023 season campaign off the dish from Strong at 13:53, before Patriarco collected the three-goal hat trick with a second from Nestor a mere 35 seconds later.
  • Dean Mohammed (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) picked up his first collegiate score at the 12:37 mark with the quick stick from Ethan Hicks (Dryden, N.Y.), before Kistner buried his second from Nestor who had the feed from behind cage.
  • Daniel Squires (Aquebogue, N.Y.) gave Morrisville the seven-goal lead with 9:04 to play in the quarter with his first collegiate score.
  • Utica added their second extra-man score but headed into the half trailing by six as Morrisville held the 9-3 advantage.
  • Utica struck quick in the third, but Morrisville responded with an unassisted goal from Strong who collected his second of the contest.
  • Utica netted two in the fourth, but it wasn't enough as the Mustangs posted the 10-6 win.
  • Strong finished with two goals and two assists, while Patriarco had the three-goal hat trick to lead goal scorers.
  • Nestor finished with three assists and added six ground balls to his totals.
  • Morrisville won the battle on the ground with a 39-32 advantage in ground balls, seven collected by DeNicola.
  • Kyle Farrell (Holtsville, N.Y.) and Zack Mabry (Suffern, N.Y.) combined for six caused turnovers, collecting a total seven ground balls.
  • Dylan Laplace (Chester, Conn.) posted the win in net, registering seven saves.
