Morrisville men rally in third to collect first win

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville men's ice hockey team picked up their first win of the 2023 season Saturday night, posting three unanswered goals in the third as they topped host SUNY Potsdam 5-4 in SUNYAC action on the road in Potsdam.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville scored three times in the third period, including the game winner with just over a minute remaining to collect their first win of the young 2023 season Saturday night, having Potsdam the 5-4 SUNYAC defeat at Maxcy Hall Arena in Potsdam.
  • Potsdam put the first of the night on the board 6:43 into the opening period, before Morrisville's Chris Mott (Nesconset, N.Y.) responded with a diving power play score to even the contest at one 12:17 in.
  • The Bears took a 3-1 lead three minutes into the second with back-to-back tallies, but Morrisville's Brett Tibbs (Mt. Airy, Md.) pulled the Mustangs within one with his first score of the season midway through the period.
  • Trailing 3-2 after two periods, Morrisville capitalized on a power play opportunity following a Potsdam boarding penalty, with Robert Haak (Spencerport, N.Y.) picking up his first collegiate score to pull the Mustangs even at three.
  • Within seconds, though, Potsdam regained the 4-3 advantage after finding the back of the net 37 ticks later.
  • Morrisville, putting a persistent attack on the Potsdam net, was able to even the contest for a second time in the frame with Stevie Gerbis (Bradenton, Fla.) collecting his first of the year at the 9:33 mark to make it a four goal tie.
  • With time winding down, Morrisville's Cameron Clark (Daytona Beach, Fla.) intercepted a Potsdam pass near the Bears net and backhanded the game winner into the net with 1:16 to go to complete the comeback.
  • Potsdam pulled their goaltender with just over a minute remaining in the contest, but Morrisville fought off the extra skater with two straight saves from senior netminder Garrett Boyonoski (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) to secure the victory.
  • Boyonoski picked up his first win of the season with a 28 save effort over the final 36:47 of the contest.
  • Andrew Manley (Whitesboro, N.Y.) collected two assists on the night, alongside Clark who had the three-point outing.
  • Curtis Abbott (Belmont, Ont.) also assisted two, while Haak and Trevor Neumann (Burlington, Ont.) also picked up a point with an assist as well.
  • Ryan Creenan (Colonia, N.J.) had 12 stops over the first 23:12.
  • The Mustangs went 2-for-3 on the power play, killing off all three attempts by the Bears across the contest.
