Morrisville women drop OT heartbreaker to #14 Cortland

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville women's hockey team battled no. 14 nationally ranked SUNY Cortland Friday night, forcing extra time, before falling in a heartbreaking 2-1 sudden victory in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • The SUNY Morrisville women's ice hockey team dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to no. 14 nationally ranked Cortland Friday night on their home ice in Morrisville in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action.
  • Cortland took an early 1-0 lead off a score 6:17 into the contest, but the Mustangs were able to limit the Red Dragons to that single tally, as netminder Maggie Jones (Marystown, N.L.) turned away 18 in the opening period.
  • Morrisville was able to pull the contest even at one at the 17:39 mark of the second as Allie Davidson (Niagara Falls, Ont.) collected the rebound off the pads of Cortland's goaltender for the tying score.
  • Hailee Easson (Okotoks, Alta.) recorded the assist after firing the first shot on net.
  • Cortland had the opportunity midway through the third to take the lead, but the Mustangs killed off the 5-on-3 Red Dragon power play to keep the visitors scoreless and force the overtime period.
  • Jones added 20 stops to her totals in the third to keep the Red Dragons scoreless in the frame.
  • In the extra time, both teams had looks at net, but neither were able to sneak one through until 1:10 remaining when the wrister from Kait Borgeois found its way over the shoulder of Jones for the sudden victory win.
  • Jones finished with a collegiate high 56 saves for the Mustangs in the loss.

  • Morrisville will return to the ice Saturday, hosting Potsdam in a 6 p.m. SUNYAC match on the Mustangs home ice in Morrisville.
