WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • The fourth seeded SUNY Morrisville Mustangs women's soccer team took down the top seeded SUNY Poly Wildcats Saturday afternoon in dramatic fashion, bouncing the hosts from the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) tournament as they advanced to the semifinals after the penalty kick shootout round.
  • Morrisville limited the Wildcats to just one look at net in the first half of action, playing to a scoreless draw midway through.
  • In the second, Poly poured on the offensive game, but senior goalkeeper Melanie Rott (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) was able to keep the hosts off the board with her play in net to force the overtime period.
  • As time wound down in the second overtime period, Poly put what was presumed to be the go ahead score in the back of the net with 20.6 seconds to go, but were whistled for offsides, waiving off the tally and sending the game into the penalty kick shootout.
  • Both teams converted their first four attempts, and on the fifth Rott gave Morrisville the 5-4 advantage with one Poly player to go.
  • With Rott returning to the line in net, and facing the fifth Poly player, the senior dove towards the right post and got a hand on the ball that knocked it wide and sent the Mustangs to the semifinal round.

WHAT'S NEXT:

  • Morrisville will return to the SUNY Poly campus tomorrow to face third seeded SUNY Delhi, who advanced to the semifinals on penalty kicks against second seeded Johnson. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
