Morrisville women drop 67-63 outing to Wildcats in overtime

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville women's basketball team battled back from a late  five-point deficit, but were unable to overcome visiting Penn College as they fell 67-63 in extra time on the Mustangs home court in Morrisville Saturday afternoon.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville women's basketball battled back from a late fourth quarter five-point deficit Saturday afternoon to force extra time but fell in the overtime period as the visiting Penn College Wildcats shot 100% from the floor to secure the 67-63 win in Morrisville.
  • Penn College utilized a strong 16-point third quarter to get back in the contest after trailing 29-21 at the half, building up a five-point lead with 1:58 remaining in the game.
  • Rachel Vieira (Caruthers, Calif.) drove for the layup a mere 10 seconds later to make it a three-point ball game, before Taylor Colone-Microni (Oneonta, N.Y.) nailed a big three from the top of the key to pull the game even at 58 with 1:07 remaining in regulation.
  • Both teams had opportunities in the final minute of the fourth but couldn't find the bottom of the net as they headed into the overtime period.
  • Penn College opened the extra time with a three-pointer to jump out in front and following two free throws for the five-point advantage, Brooke Hammersley (Weedsport, N.Y.) drove for a bucket in the paint to cut the lead to two.
  • Carli Pardee (South Kortright, N.Y.) collected the offensive rebound off the free throw miss and found Vieira who was sent to the line for two, converting both and making it a one-point game with 3:14 to go.
  • Penn College, however, would rally for six straight points to open the gap to seven, forcing Morrisville to stage a late comeback attempt.
  • The Mustangs rallied for a 6-0 spurt of their own to again make it a one point game, with 29 ticks showing on the clock, but the Wildcats hit the front end of two to extend the lead to two; and forced a Mustang turnover before wrapping up the game with two more from the line for the win.
  • Four posted double figures for the Mustangs in their efforts on the day, including Cara Walker (Phelps, N.Y.) who led all scorers with 23, completing the double-double with 19 rebounds, while adding four blocks and two steals to her totals.
  • Colone-Microni added 17 to go along with four boards and two steals, while Vieira contributed 13 and five steals.
  • Hammersley rounded out the Mustang leaderboard with 10 points, snagging five rebounds.

  • Morrisville returns to the court Friday, hosting Lancaster Bible in a 5 p.m. contest on their home court.
