Walker's double-double leads to series sweep of Lancaster

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Sophomore Cara Walker (Phelps, N.Y.) led all scorers with 22 points Friday night, adding 16 rebounds for the double-double, leading host SUNY Morrisville women's basketball to a series sweep of Lancaster Bible College in United East play in Morrisville with the 53-43 victory.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville women's basketball swept the United East series against Lancaster Bible College Friday night, posting the 53-43 victory behind a double-double performance by sophomore Cara Walker (Phelps, N.Y.) in the win.
  • Walker was one of three to post double figures on the night, leading all scorers with 22 points while adding 16 boards and assisting another three.
  • Taylor Colone-Microni (Oneonta, N.Y.) added 11 in the win, also registering three assists, while teammate Brooke Hammersley (Weedsport, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring leaderboard with 10, snagging eight off the glass.
  • Both teams got off to a slow start with the hosts holding the narrow 12-11 lead after the opening quarter, but Morrisville expanded their lead late in the second with an 8-0 run over the final three minutes of the quarter to broaden the gap to a 29-20 halftime advantage.
  • The Chargers were able to pull within four late in the third, but a layup from Hammersley as time expired made it a multi-possession game heading into the final frame.
  • Lancaster cut the lead to one midway through the final stance with a three ball from the top of the key, and Morrisville's Tayghan Doorley (Hornell, N.Y.) responded with one of her own, before Walker hit two from the charity stripe, sparking a 16-5 run for the Mustangs over the final five minutes of the contest for the win.
  • Morrisville held the Chargers to just 27.4% shooting from the floor on the night, while collecting 11 points off turnovers and dominating the paint 26-11.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
 
  • Morrisville will face Penn St. Harrisburg Saturday in a battle for the top spot in league standings. Both teams are currently in a three-way tie for the United East league with St. Mary's College of Maryland. Tip off is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Morrisville.
