Morrisville field hockey opens with loss to Highlanders

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville field hockey team dropped a hard fought season opening loss Friday night, falling 3-0 to visiting Houghton College on Drake Field in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting Houghton College topped host SUNY Morrisville by a 3-0 non-conference final score Friday night in the season opener for the Mustangs on Drake Field in Morrisville.
  • The Highlanders dominated the opening minutes of the contest and were finally able to break through at the 10-minute mark as Deborah Cross one-timed the feed off Elzandie Du Plessis for the first tally of the night.
  • Both teams played back and forth for the remainder of the half with Houghton heading into the break leading 1-0.
  • Morrisville had two opportunities to even the score in the third, but the play of Madison Tadusz kept the Mustangs off the board.
  • With Houghton leading 1-0 after three quarters of action, Morrisville again pressed the Highland defense with opportunities in the fourth, including three break-a-ways, but came up short as the visitors collected the win.
  • Houghton put two more on the board in the fourth, including one from Jace Hunzinger who collected her own rebound for the tally, and a second by Cross who had a chip from the left for the 3-0 advantage.
  • Morgan Dueber (Owego, N.Y.) registered the loss in net, turning away 15 Houghton attempts.
  • Tadusz had three saves in the win.

  • Morrisville returns to the field Saturday, hosting Southern Virginia University at 4 p.m. on Drake Field.
