Morrisville captures overtime thriller over Southern Virginia

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville field hockey team picked up a 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon over visiting Southern Virginia University, needing extra time to compete the comeback win on Drake Field in Morrisville.

  • Location: Drake Field, Morrisville, N.Y.
  • Records: Morrisville 1-1, Southern Virginia 0-2

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville captured a thrilling overtime win Saturday afternoon to pull their record even at 1-1, as they topped Southern Virginia 2-1 in non-conference action.
  • Both teams played back and forth in the opening quarter, but it was in the second where Karenna Olson slapped one past the Mustangs defense to put numbers on the board for the visitors at the 22:35 mark for a 1-0 Southern Virginia lead.
  • Morrisville was able to pull the contest even in the third at 39:18.
  • Kate Walters (Fayetteville, N.Y.) sent the ball into the circle from the right, where Casey McLaughlin (Rome, N.Y.) got a stick on it to tip it to an open Emma Plett (Mitchell, Man.) for the sweeping score.
  • Both teams continued to challenge play in the midfield, but neither were able to find the back of the cage, forcing extra time.
  • In overtime, each team recorded two shots, and Morrisville goalkeeper Morgan Dueber (Owego, N.Y.) made a lunging save to keep the Spartans off the board, but it was a two on one breakaway midway through the extra period that was the deciding play.
  • Morrisville pushed the ball forward and found an open Mclaughlin who broke past the Southern Virginia defense to carry the ball into the scoring circle where she chipped it over to a wide open Erika Herrman (Oneida, N.Y.).
  • Herrman collected the ball and fired it into the back of the cage for the winning tally, giving Morrisville the 2-1 win on opening weekend.
  • Dueber finished the contest with five sages, three that came in the third quarter of action, as she collected the win.
