Softball falls to Cazenovia in home opener

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Mustangs hosted the Wildcats of Cazenovia College on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the visitors by scores of 9-1 and 8-0. The doubleheader marked the first home contests of the season for SUNY Morrisville. Toni Baker (Pittsgrove, NJ) and Hannah Godfrey (Southgate, MI) led the Mustangs, each recording two hits.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Morrisville held Cazenovia scoreless in the first inning of game one, but the Wildcats knocked in two runs on three hits in the second to put the first runs on the scoreboard.
  • Baker recorded her first hit of the day, singling to left field early in the second. Two batters later, Makayla Lawrence singled to left center field to load the bases, but the next two Mustang batters struck out, leaving three on base for the hosts.
  • Freshman, Sophie Keehle (Conklin, NY) registered her first collegiate hit to get things started for Morrisville in the third inning. A sacrifice bunt from Jessica Burlew (Hopatcong, NJ) allowed Keehle to move into scoring position at third. The Mustangs next batter, Maria Santilli (Bristol, CT) grounded out to short, but not before Keehle could cross home plate scoring the lone run for Morrisville.
  • The Mustang defense allowed only two runs in the fourth. Baker posted her second hit of the game to start the inning for the home team, but three consecutive outs to end the inning gave the visitors a 4-1 lead.
  • The bats heated up for Cazenovia in the fifth as the Wildcats scored five unanswered runs on four hits, earning the victory in game one.
  • Kellina Murphy (Yonkers, NY) pitched all five innings in game one, allowing nine hits and walking three batters.
  • The momentum carried over into game two for Cazenovia, holding a 6-0 lead after two innings of play. The visitors would punch in an additional run in both the fourth and fifth innings to earn the win in five.
  • Three Mustangs earned four hits for Morrisville, with two coming from sophomore, Hannah Godfrey. Godfrey, who pitched all five innings in game two, walked only one batter and allowed nine hits in the loss.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
 
The Mustangs are scheduled to open United East conference play on Friday afternoon at Penn St.-Abington, pending field conditions. Games are slated to start at 3:00pm and 5:00pm, pending field conditions.
