Morrisville women bump United East record to 8-2, complete sweep of St. Mary's College

Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville women's basketball team upped their league record to 8-2 overall Friday night as they pushed past St. Mary's College of Maryland with a 64-56 home court win in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville women's basketball pushed past a persistent visiting St. Mary's College of Maryland squad Friday night in Morrisville, collecting a 64-56 league win to up their record to 8-2 overall in United East standings.
  • The win completes the series sweep over the Seahawks.
  • Three picked up double-figures for the hosts on the night, including Brooke Hammersley (Weedsport, N.Y.) who posted a team high 20 points on 10-of-16 from the floor.
  • Hammersley also added 10 rebounds and five assists to her totals, registering a sixth double-double on the season.
  • Cara Walker (Phelps, N.Y.) added 13 points and five boards to her totals, while Rachel Vieira (Caruthers, Calif.) snuck in 12, while snagging six off the glass and three assists.
  • Vieira also picked the Seahawks pockets four times, while adding three blocked shots to her totals on the night.
  • Morrisville dominated play in the paint, utilizing their running ability to quickly catch the visitors off guard while racing out to a 44-24 points in the paint advantage.
  • The Mustangs trailed by two after the opening quarter and battled back in the second to claim the 30-28 lead at the break.
  • A back-and-forth third quarter saw the hosts carry a four-point lead into the final frame, where the Seahawks tied the contest up four times.
  • A jumper by leading scorer Karon Williams with 1:22 to go in the fourth knotted it up for the 12th time on the night, but Taylor Colone-Microni (Oneonta, N.Y.) gave the hosts the advantage on the ensuing possession as she drove the center of the lane to bank the layup off the glass for the two-point lead.
  • Williams attempted a floater of her own on the next possession, but the ball bounced off the rim and into Walker's hands where she was immediately fouled and sent to the line, hitting both free throw attempts.
  • Williams once again attempted a last effort for the visitors, but Dezia Becker (Endicott, N.Y.) snagged her sixth board of the night and found her way to the line for two.
  • A big block by Hammersley left the Seahawks empty on yet another offensive possession, while Vieira added a free throw to her totals, and Walker extended the lead to eight with two of her own with four seconds to go.
  • After a timeout, St. Mary's advanced the ball for one final effort, but Vieira snagged the pass and secured the win for the Mustangs.
