Morrisville's comeback attempt falls short in heartbreaking loss to Potsdam

Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville men's hockey team scored three unanswered tallies in the third in a comeback attempt, but it wasn't enough as visiting SUNY Potsdam netted the 6-5 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win Saturday night in Morrisville.

THE BASICS:
  • Final score: Morrisville 5, Potsdam 6 (score by period: Morrisville 0-2-3, Potsdam 2-2-2)
  • Location: Morrisville IcePlex, Morrisville, N.Y.
  • Records: Morrisville 7-15, Potsdam 5-16

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting Potsdam held off a persistent Morrisville attack Saturday night in the third period as the hosts attempted a comeback rally with three unanswered tallies, but it wasn't enough as the Bears edged the hosts by one down the line for the 6-5 SUNYAC decision.
  • Playing to nearly a scoreless first period, Potsdam struck at the 17:29 mark with a one timer from the right wing to the center of the zone for the 1-0 lead, and within moments added a second as Morrisville was sent to the penalty box.
  • The power play goal came at the 18:56 mark as the loose puck was gathered in front of Morrisville netminder Ryan Creenan (Colonia, N.J.) for the tally and 2-0 advantage after one.
  • In the second, Morrisville cut the lead to one, as Benjamin Lindberg (East Aurora, N.Y.) notched his second of the season, collecting the loose puck on the rebound and lifting it over stick side of the Potsdam goaltender on the two on one opportunity.
  • Cameron Clark (Daytona Beach, Fla.) and Eric Melso (Philadelphia, Pa.) were credited with the assists.
  • Potsdam regained a two-goal advantage 38 ticks later at the 13:40 mark of the period as the defense moved the puck from the right to left side of the ice and sent the shot inside the right post for the tally.
  • The Bears extended the lead to three converting their second power play score of the night at 16:25, hitting the inside of the right post for the extra man tally.
  • Morrisville added a second tally of the period in the closing minute, taking advantage of a Potsdam penalty for roughing, as James Boisvert (Mansfield, Tex.) rifled home his second of the season from the center blue.
  • Chris Mott (Nesconset, N.Y.) and Curtis Abbott (Belmont, Ont.) were credited with the assists on the tally.
  • Six minutes into the third, the visitors widened the gap to 5-2 with a backhanded shot over the stick of Creenan,
  • Morrisville got one back in the third on the power play following a major penalty for hitting from behind, as Trevor Grasby (Holland Landing, Ont.) chipped in the loose puck on the crease for the score midway through the final frame, before Melso added his first of the night after Grasby forced the costly Potsdam turnover behind the Bears net.
  • The Mustangs tied it up at five with 2:23 remaining on the clock, crashing the net and poking in the game tying tally off the stick of senior Ben Sprague (Norfolk, N.Y.), but that was short lived as Potsdam stripped the Mustangs of the puck on the clear attempt and one-timed it over the glove of Creenan for the go ahead score 18 seconds later.
  • Richard Hart (Liverpool, N.Y.) and Michael Keating (Burlington, Ont.) were credited assists on Sprague's tally.
  • Morrisville pulled Creenan for the extra skater in the final minute of action in an attempt to net the equalizer, but Potsdam was able to hold on for the 6-5 league win.
  • Creenan collected 23 saves in the loss between the pipes.

WHAT'S NEXT:

  • Morrisville will return to the ice tomorrow at SUNY Geneseo for a rescheduled contest from earlier this month. The puck will drop at 6 p.m. in Geneseo in the season finale for the Mustangs.
